Church: Marriage Law Threatens Social Services

Homelessx390 | Advocate.com

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., says that a proposed marriage equality law would destroy its ability to provide social service programs for the city by forcing the church to comply with laws prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people.

While religious groups would not be required to perform or accommodate same-sex wedding ceremonies under the new law, they would be required to obey other antidiscrimination measures, and that poses a problem for the archdiocese, according to The Washington Post.

“Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city,” TheWashington Post reported.

The church’s social services arm, Catholic Charities, partners with Washington, D.C., to provide services for adoptions, homelessness, and health care for tens of thousands of residents.

IF this is true, it is absolutely one of the most anti-Christian acts that I have ever heard of. The Catholic Church has been a leader in helping those afflicted with HIV/AIDS around the world, and to hear this news runs counter to all of the positive things the Church has done over the past many years. Not only does it endanger the welfare of the poor, it also poses a threat to the souls that will be lost to the Church- an obligation that is fundimental to Church Doctrine. As a former seminarian, I do know of many who are ordanined and living an active gay lifestyle or who remain closeted. I left prior to ordination because I could live a "lie". Others felt that they could take advantage of the system and that in itself is a failure within. Now the Church has gone beyond the moral and into the political realm. That is a very dangerous step for it to take as it now opens the door to the oversight of groups who were, heretofore, not allowed to extend their authority over a church

"LET US DISCRIMINATE AGAINST GAYS OR WE'LL SCREW THE POOR PEOPLE!" That's what they're extorting the government with. "If you don't let us discriminate against gays, we'll stop helping the poor. We understand that might hurt or end with the deaths of some people, but we MUST be able to discriminate! WE MUST BE ALLOWED TO HATE!" Come on, people! It's time to TAX THE CHURCHES! TAX THEM TILL THEY BLEED!

Cardinal McCarrick...does this same rational hold true for gay priests that you have ordained in several dioceses? Surely gay priests have destroyed the priesthood, don't you think? Isn't the social order compromised and families destroyed by bread consecrated by GAY men? Gosh, I was hit on by a bishop, who recently passed over to Spirit. Stop it! Please stop it! Stop choosing issues that divide the flock. I again call for all gay and lesbian ordained and lay ministers to stand up. I can out dozens and dozens of these fine ministers... for now I will reserve this as I reserve not to mention the gay Bishop's name. It's time to embrace all of God's people.

No, no it wouldn't. As a matter of fact, under federal law you could continue to discriminate on the basis of religion and sexual orientation in hiring decisions and keep your tax-exempt status.

I want to be sure I understand this. The church has threatened to stop helping the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the sick across the city because there is a "possibility" they may have an employee "somewhere" who "may" have a partner they are required to treat as a spouse? How did this whole marriage thing become such an obsession of the church's anyway. In a stretch we are as a community 7% of the population, and there are perhaps what, 25% of those at any given time who will be married? Let's compare this to, let's say, the millions of Americans who get divorced every year? Most definitely something the bible does not allow, or the 47% of children now born out of wedlock in this country. So the church is willing to ignore these numbers and the "damage" it does to children and the institution of marriage, but is willing to totally stop all their humanitarian work on the "chance" they may have to treat a couple of people with the respect and dignity given to heterosexual couples?

I love it when the Church releases statements like these. It just sinks their ship even deeper and shows to normal educated balanced thinking folks, that they are an outdated dinosaur.

Threats to social service have nothing to do with marriage equality. This is another attempt at continuing to use government money to do the tasks that Scripture has given them to do. Tax money is not to be used to do some denomination's work. The funds are to come from their membership.

Oh, too bad. Is the catholic PEDOPHILE empire afraid that it will have to follow the laws like everyone else? If I were on the DC council, I'd be happy to tell these freaks to just leave town.
