Ohio Flash Mob for Gay Marriage

A group of students at the University of Cincinnati this week held a flash mob to "demonstrate the effects of hatred and inaction."

On Tuesday, a group of about 25 students showed up spontaneously at a heavily trafficked spot on campus. Student Blake Jelley says the action was in response to the passage of Question 1 in Maine, a voter-driven repeal of the law legalizing same-sex marriage that was passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. John Baldacci in the spring. Jelley writes, "In response to the passage of Question 1 in Maine, which stripped same-sex couples across the state of their right to marriage equality, we came together to demonstrate the effects of hatred and inaction. No longer will the lies and bigotry from those opposed to LGBTQ equality hinder us from demanding our rights. No longer will we allow inaction to follow promises. The time to mobilize is now. We showed the nation that even in the face of defeat, we will continue to fight. Actions speak louder than words."

Students wore duct tape over their mouths and donned T-shirts that read, "Are you listening?" -- a quote from Lady Gaga at the October gay rights march in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to these people for standing up for what they believe in. The time for ACTION is NOW...they are correct! I too am tired of the loud voices of hypocrisy; of those who believe its there mission to tell me who I can love. We must come out to family, friends, and coworkers and show them one by one that there is love, but intolerance of intolerance!

First of all, I participated in the Flash Mob at UC. It was reaffirming as well as informative. As I began to read the posts, I was saddened that the target became the organization that published the article rather than those who are preventing our equal rights. Why are people spending their time posting complaints against each other? Don't you realize that is what they want? Divide and conquer - the oldest war plan in history. Whether it is slow change or quick change - it is change all the same - baby steps or not. Rather than wasting all of our energies fighting with each other, let's direct it to a more productive purpose - equality - and direct your writing to emailing your Representative or Congressmen - those who need to hear about the change that should take place.

I am well aware of what a flash mob is having participated in many of them, however it is clear that well over 25 were involved in the beginiing...people standing there watching are not considered the people who STARTED it. the group that began the mob before anyone started participating was well over 25. The Advocate also always reports all the great news that the HRC has done..and we ALL know that is a load of crap too. HRC is a private cash cow for Joe solmonese so he can continue to raise money to pay rent an his fancy cars and homes, and so he can continue going to fancy expensive dinners..the whole time telling people to shut up and wait for equality..LOL he does not want equality because then his cash will stop coming in...he WANTS baby steps so he can keep saying look what we did!!..and people fall for it. HRC and JOE are the worst thing for gays since Maggie Gallager..and the Advocate worships him.

@ dieter: It's a FLASH MOB...What usually happens is there's a core group of people (say 25) that start the event off. As people walk by, they are 'drawn' into the performance, causing it to grow.

LOL...MY racist comments?...calling the Advocate out on it's CONSTANT misrepresentation of stories is racist exactly HOW?..this I just got to hear..LOL WOW. The advocate is in such a rush to print it's stories..many of which are just fluff pieces or irrelevant to the gay community, it constantly PRINTS WRONG FACTS! That is a real fact.
