Twihards, Jacob, and a Lifestyle Choice

TAYLOR LAUTNER KRISTEN STEWART SCREENGRAB X390 | Advocate.com

Much fuss has been made of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s relationship with the Mormon Church and its financial backing of Proposition 8 in California and Question 1 in Maine, stripping those states of legal same-sex marriage.

But a line from the film adaptation of her book New Moon is raising even more eyebrows. In the film Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) attempts to explain the fact that he is a werewolf to Bella (Kristen Stewart) by saying, “It’s not a lifestyle choice, Bella. I was born this way.”

The scene goes down differently in the book, and the line, presumably written by New Moon’s screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, draws obvious parallels to the oft-used script for coming out.

The line hasn’t gone unnoticed in the press. The Contra Costa Times called the exchange “cute” while the Dallas Voice  literally refers to it as Black’s “coming out scene.”

An article for Examiner.com points to numerous bisexual and homoerotic undertones throughout the film, while the sci-fi website The Geek Files suggests the film’s wolf pack is really just an extended metaphor for being gay.

From London's Times Online: "The rest of New Moon concerns Bella's growing relationship with local beefcake Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). The latter though, in another telegraphed allegory, is struggling with his sexual orientation and eventually rejects Bella for a foursome of local rowdies in cut-off denim shorts and baby-oiled torsos. 'It's not a lifestyle choice, Bella! I was born this way!' he says, before fleeing into the woods with the beefy boys — they are also werewolves.”

Twihards seem to have mixed response to the line. While many seem oddly titillated at the thought that the werewolf subplot might just be a metaphor for being gay, others are insulted the line even appears in the film.

“It’s ridiculous people are even discussing this line,” a commenter posted on the movie review website RottenTomatoes.com. “It’s clear Jacob isn’t gay and people are spending way too much time reading into this line.”

The number of people commenting on this comment? One hundred thirty four — and that’s just in the first hour after it was posted.

Meyer and Lautner have yet to comment on the line in an interview, and the former, at least, has granted only one in-depth sit-down since the film’s release, amounting to half an hour with Oprah Winfrey.

So the line’s true intentions, like Meyer’s, may well continue to be a mystery.

When I saw the movie opening day I caught this line immediately and knew it was a shout out to the gay community in some way. I mean the words Jacob uses are so blatant - they are the words used by every gay man or woman in a film who is coming out to a friend or family member. It was also the device used in X-Men 2 when a character's parents ask Iceman "can't you just, not be a mutant." I find it a nice touch.

The line was used in reference to the character being born a werewolf, not being transformed mid life. It is that simple. That line although more associated with the Gay issue more so in the past decade or two, applies to anyone Gay or Straight who feels mistreated for not being of the so called norm & feels defected. Black Friday I was approached at the Mall to reverse Prop 8. I would have signed a petition, but they wanted a $150.00 (Norm) donation to fund the campaign. "No thanks, I will save my money for my Gay Divorce." LOL - I fear the Prop 8 issue if persisted by us may back fire by taking away what little rights we already have. Let them have the word marriage. In most states, if you hire a lawyer for a living will you can have legal documentation for Hospital visitations & property inheritance to be left to whomever means the most to you. Go see the movie for your entertainment, it is good. Save plitical view for another time. Live stress free.

Of course, the line was meant to taunt. Thoses with working brains such as Gay Men know exactly what was meant by the line. Those who say it was just a line and it meant nothing are those who would rather see women as just props again and again for whoever the male leads are in the picture. I think that bella should realize that no one can compete with a shirtless, sweaty-wet muscular tight butt hard belly beefy young stud. Of course, the wolfpack is a metaphor (sp?)for hot young masculine gay males. Like Bette Milder said in the Movie "Vegas",... "There's a God, after all".

LOL-I honestly can't believe people! It was 1 line in a movie, that I, found funny. The character is not gay & the other members of the pack are not gay, as far as I know. It is a story, fantasy, a fable. For as long as I can remember, gays try to imply their sexuality to any "hot" guy that even hugs another man or shows any sensetivity whatsoever. It was not fun for me when I was a teenager, to be called "sissy" & "faggot" because I was artistic & not athletic...especially since it was true. So, I have a great deal of sympathy for those who undergo the same harassments, completely unfounded. On another note...the authors political & religious views do not make me happy. But, apparently, she would think the same about me. Can't we all just enjoy the movie & the books for what they are? Entertainment.

I could care less what the line implies... Im more concerned that author Stephenie Meyer is a member of the Mormon Church and that it financially backed Proposition 8 in California. Why are we putting money into the pockets of someone who is part of a church that funds our oppression and inequality? You cant tell me she isnt aware of whats going on in the world or what the Mormon Church is doing... I guess when youre making the kind of money she is, you dont really need to give a crap about the people that got you there though.

Well, Jacob keeps running away from Bella to meet his band of shirtless "buddies," who doesn't think werewolves are really ankle-grabbing-dick-smoking-sons-of-Sodom? Plus, Lautner sets off every gaydar alarm in the vicinity.

I was a little taken back and a little offended by this line in the movie and yes I too was trying to understand the point in such a thing being said and what it was using as a comparison.
