F4M? F4F? WTF!

Celeb mags are all agog: Lindsay is either lesbian, bisexual, or just another straight girl engaged in an elaborate -- albeit genius -- publicity stunt. But really, what difference does it make?

It used to be so easy to psychoanalyze Lindsay Lohan. All the trappings of young fame were right there: the box office successes, the forgettable pop music, the overbearing stage mother, the troubled father, and a revolving door of famous boy toys who kept her company as her heady Hollywood life spiraled out of control. The shock we felt as she squandered our goodwill with stints in rehab, cocaine-fueled car crashes, paparazzi shots of her bare crotch, and an increasingly irritable demeanor was warranted -- after all, wasn’t this cute young thing from Long Island supposed to be the antithesis of a celebutard? But it was never easy to look away, and after a while it started to feel as if she didn’t want us to.

We’ve obliged: We’re still watching Lindsay Lohan’s story unfold, thanks to the battalion of tabloid magazines and celebrity-oriented websites that routinely trample the boundaries between keeping tabs on her diminished career and chronicling her every waking moment. In the past year, we’ve watched as she’s taken up what appears to be a serious relationship with 31-year-old DJ Samantha Ronson, an out lesbian. And here’s where it gets interesting: Lohan, one of the preeminent young starlets of her generation, seems to have entered into this same-sex relationship with little to no fallout. What does it say about evolving attitudes in the media -- and among the public at large—that Lindsay Lohan is suddenly living lesbian and the news has barely caused a stir?

The press has covered Lindsay and Samantha’s union with almost unheard-of restraint. After months of media speculation about their ongoing outings -- using code words and phrases like “inseparable companions,” “more than just friends,” “BFFs,” and “gal pals” -- People magazine has finally gone full-bore with a two-page spread devoted to the couple in its August 4 issue headlined lindsay in love. The article -- featuring five pictures of the duo variously holding hands, blowing kisses, and beaming as they share ice-cream cones -- all but confirms their status as lovebirds, even if Lohan and Ronson have yet to do so themselves: More than a year after they were first spotted club-hopping, neither woman has publicly commented on the exact nature of their relationship. Their obfuscation has only been magnified by comments from Lohan’s press-happy family. Her father, Michael, told the New York Daily News in May, “Lindsay’s life choices are up to her.” Her mother, Dina, spent months refuting the rumors but appeared to backtrack in July when she told reporters, “They’re great friends, and as long as my daughter is happy and healthy, it is what it is.”

With age comes wisdom! Lindsay may only be 22 years old but she's seemingly wiser than many twice her age. We could all take a lesson from the new and improved Lilo, Ms. Lohan if you have nothing nice to say. Frankly I'm impressed and have been enjoying watching this beautiful young lady come of age. As difficult as it is to navigate life in general, imagine if you had to do it with countless gawkers and strangers staring and judging your every move. I dare say most of us would have crumbled long ago. I love the fact that's she has taken to blogging on her myspace page. I'd rather hear what she has to say rather than what others have to say about her. I admire the fact that she has the sense that many of us don't to keep her personal life private. When she goes home and closes the doors it's her life...we all need to back TFO and "PLEASE RESPECT HER PRIVACY! In the words of Paul McCartney why don't we all just "Let it be!"

There are numerous examples of male actors in Hollywood having exactly the kind of past that makes Lohan in some peoples eyes so unreedememble. Car crashes, drugs, alcohol, long list of previous partners etc Somehow when its a woman it seems ok to subject them to all kinds of slander. It's a double standard that seems to be perpertuated as much by women as men and is deeply misogynist. Is Lindsay Lohan more of a trainwreck than say a Colin Farell or Shia Labeouf ? As an actor a year younger than Lohan and knowing how the buisness works I actually think she is beeing quite brave. She isn't hiding anything and i don't see why she should have to make some big public statement about her sexuality. Just living her life and getting back to fulfilling her potential as an actor would really be the best statement she could make.

Lohan has a long history of being with women.; the public just isn't paying attention because publicists and bearding work. I never knew Lohan was considered to be the anti-celebutard; in anything she's proven herself the prototype. Ronson is interesting and has emerged a lesbian sex symbol in her own right; in fact her linkage with a typical Hollywood trainwreck like Lohan is seen by many as her biggest flaw. What Ronson's popularity says about the lack of, and craving for, beautiful young butch and androgynous women is far more interesting than her unfortunate choice of a girlfriend. Lohan needs to stay clean, show up for work, live to be thirty, and then maybe she might become even vaguely interesting.

Lindsay has led a life under the constant scrutiny and glare of the media spotlight. She has not had the chance to make her mistakes in private (like most of us are allowed to do) and she didn't really have the chance to figure out who she is without others trying to decide for her. Lindsay has been surrounded by so many people who appear to only want something from her, save for Samantha who has been one of the few people who Lindsay can be herself with without fear of being used (no matter what the tabloids or bloggers might want us to believe). Lindsay's relationship with Samantha seems to be one of mutual respect and love for each other and the two of them seem to have each others back. I look at Lindsay these days and see a confident young woman who appears very happy and more self assured than ever. I think that the tabloids and bloggers should just allow her to be happy.

Thing is; it has caused a stir. Firstly, there are a lot of people who are riveted/obsessed (check out the discussion on afterellen.com…); then, there’s an AVALANCHE of homophobic responses being posted online, and a fascinating variety of them too. There’s disbelief (lesbian desire is often strangely difficult for people to believe in); there’s a sexist/puritanical dismissal of lohan as such a slut that she couldn't possibly be in a real relationship; there’s feigned, world-weary disinterest (lesbianism, YAWN!); there’s a complete inability to grasp the concept of bisexuality or take it seriously (either you’re a certified dyke, or you're having a faux sophomore-year-in-college-moment, apparently); and then there’s genderpanic about Samantha. It is a big deal for a real starlet (albeit a tarnished one) to step out with a woman who is kind of genderqueer. I would have thought the advocate would have noticed that.

I personally think that Lindsay is a lesbian who has been closeted since she was 17. What I can see, with Lohan and Ronson is that, there is intimacy between them. With all the guys it was just public make-out sessions. I look back now and think her agents just bearded her. Also, on the L Word. The character of Niki is strikingly similar to Lohan. I read that the character was created by Angela Robinson, who worked with Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded. I think she was also afraid of coming out to her parents, especially her father. The fact that he told the press that he will not walk her down the aisle if she marries Sam and says their relationship is against God shows how against homosexuality he is. I think she needed to be open about her relationship with Sam for her own inner peace and happiness.
