Mitcham Finally Nabs Sponsorship

Matthew Mitcham has been appointed an ambassador for Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company. The Melbourne-based Telstra is the number one provider of phone and broadband service in the nation.

Gay diver Matthew Mitcham has finally landed a sponsorship six months after winning a gold medal for Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Mitcham has been appointed an ambassador for Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company. The Melbourne-based Telstra is the number one provider of phone and broadband service in the nation.

Amanda Johnston-Pell, executive director of brands and marketing communications for the company, says in a press release, "Matthew's performance at the Olympics last year was sensational, and he demonstrated all the characteristics that we look for in our ambassadors -- confidence, passion, and excellence in his sport. Matthew is a positive role model for all Australians, and we look forward to working with him as his diving career progresses."

Mitcham's contract with Telstra lasts until December 31, 2009. (Neal Broverman, Advocate.com)

a big THANK YOU to telstra and really hope this is only the beginning of MM's endorsements unfortunately i have no way of supporting this company in the u.s. other than sending these heartfelt thanks to them for supporting our superb athlete any company that endorses MM with products in the u.s. will get 100% loyalty from me, my family and friends, and if i ever hear a company specifically turned down MM in any way, they can say good by to big bucks

Happy for you Matt - best wished going forward... GLBT youth need good role models in the world today and you've proven to be an excellent one. (How cool would it be for him to do something with Greg Louganis - maybe some fundraiser or something? - Two great gay sports icons!)

Seriously, one would think Matthew would be an ideal spokesperson. Aside from being fabulously handsome (and photogenic) he was the very picture of good sportsmanship at the Olympics. Very fetchingly modest and polite in all his interviews and at the medal ceremony he's actually a very good role-model. Anyone that minimizes that on the basis of his sexuality is a bigot pure and simple.

Matthew- you are a doll. Stick to your guns and you will keep rising. I am glad that you found a sponsor. Too bad for those that have passed up a good opportunity. Let us know who they were and we can just not buy those products anymore. It is just a shame the way he has been treated, including not showing his kiss with his boyfriend on TV. Don't worry, we love you and never get tired of seeing you kiss your boyfriend. All these jerks that treat you badly can just go you know what themselves.

Finally, out of all the bigotry and companies ignoring him because he's gay comes a little fair treatment for this handsome accomplished young man
