Three tabloid
newspapers in the West African country of Cameroon are
caught up in a war to out prominent public figures. The
papers, quoting so-called reliable sources, have
alleged that dozens of politicians, entertainers, and
religious figures are gay.
Human rights groups are outraged at the wave of
accusations, with some comparing the outings to "the Inquisition."
But the papers don't seem as if they're
going to stop any time soon. The editor of one tabloid
told Agence France-Presse, "It's been a long time
since our circulation exceeded 5,000. Since we began dealing
with homosexuality, it has gone up to more than 20,000."
Homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon and can carry a prison
term of up to five years. (Sirius OutQ News)
