Broadway legend
Carol Channing, 85, made some less than flattering
comments about her gay fans in an interview with the Gay
People's Chronicle on Friday.
When interviewer
Kaizaad Kotwal asked Channing why she thinks she has
such a large and loyal gay fan base, she had this to say: "I
don't think about them. I'm grateful that they seem to
like me. They're terribly loyal to me. But I'm
knee-deep in the Bible, and you know what it says
about that."
Kotwal later
asked Channing to clarify her position on LGBT struggles for
equal rights, to which she responded: "I don't think about
it. If they can't take care of their own problems, why
should I bother? It's not my problem."
These remarks are
a distinct departure from her earlier public
declarations in support of her gay fan base and her
appearances at LGBT events in West Hollywood,
Calif., and San Francisco. (The Advocate)
