Former
Advocate columnist Norah Vincent discusses her hit
book Self-made Man on Friday, January 20, on
ABC's 20/20. Vincent's book, which hits
bookstores on Friday, is her personal recounting of
the 18 months she spent living undercover as a man. Her
gender venture began one night when she dressed in boy drag
for fun and realized that she could pass as male. She
developed a male persona—Ned—and, as
Ned, did everything from dating to job interviews to
bowling with the boys. In the end, however, she found that
being Ned was seriously upsetting her equilibrium as a
woman. In an upcoming Advocate interview,
Vincent says: "Gender identity runs very deep in all
of us…and messing with it can have dire
consequences."
