Eric Stern, the
top leader of the National Stonewall Democrats, announced
his resignation on Monday, saying he needs a break from
politics. Stern will officially step down April 1 from
his position as executive director of the Stonewall
Democrats, the national activist group serving the
interests of LGBT Democrats.
“As a
cancer survivor, my health has always been of paramount
importance to me,” said Stern. “While I
have not had any health-related complications, the
last five years of constant campaign-related work have
taken their toll on me, and I need to take a break from
politics before I completely burn out and risk damage
to my health and well-being.”
Under Stern's
tenure, the National Stonewall Democrats became more
financially stable, saw an increase in membership, and added
numerous local chapters.
“The
electoral, financial, and political progress that we have
made with Eric's leadership is remarkable,”
said Stephen Driscoll, cochair of the National
Stonewall Democrats' board of directors. “When we
asked him to reconsider his decision, Eric was able to
demonstrate how the health of the organization allows
him the opportunity to leave.”
The
group's deputy director, Jo Wyrick, will serve as
interim executive director until a formal search has
been completed for Stern's replacement. (The
