New Mexico is in custody following the stabbing Monday
of her mother and sister. And her coming out as a lesbian
may have been a factor in the crime.
Carissa McGee,
16, is considered one of the most gifted basketball,
volleyball, and track stars in the state. She has been
charged with two counts of attempted murder after her
sister and mother were stabbed several times.
Early Monday
morning police were called to her Las Cruces home to find
44-year-old Anita McGee and 17-year-old Marie McGee wounded
in the front yard of the house next door, bleeding
from multiple stab wounds. KOB-TV in Albuquerque
reported that Carissa became angry when her mother and
sister began ridiculing her for being a lesbian. But a
police spokesman would not confirm a motive.
The president of
the Las Cruces–area chapter of Parents, Families, and
Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Merlyn Risser, says she's
saddened that Carissa would be ridiculed for being a
lesbian and fears that lack of understanding and
tolerance would be the cause of such a traumatic
situation. Carissa was expected to appear before a judge as
early as Tuesday afternoon. (Sirius OutQ News)
