Two boys have
apologized to a hotel owner in tiny Meade, Kan., for
stealing the hotel’s rainbow flag. The owner of the
Lakeway Hotel says the boys’ father brought
them in to apologize late last week.
The hotel has
suffered a boycott and vandalism after The Meade County
News newspaper printed a photo of the flag and listed a
Web site about the flag’s gay pride symbolism.
The owners of the hotel, J.R. and Robin Knight, say
they didn't even know the gay rights connection to the
rainbow flag. They hung it after their 12-year-old son
bought it for them because the colors reminded him of
The Wizard of Oz and its Kansas connection.
But some local
groups that were upset about the flag's symbolism stopped
meeting at the hotel's restaurant. And last week someone
threw a brick with the word fag scrawled on it
through the hotel's plate glass window.
Despite the
opposition, the Knights have continued hoisting the flag on
principle, saying they have nothing against gay people.
