Older, white gay
and bisexual men in Tucson are commonly engaging in
unprotected sex and are being infected with HIV at high
rates, according to a study conducted by the Pima
County health department, the Arizona Daily Star
reports. Department staff interviewed more than 300
gay and bisexual men and found that risky sex was
commonly reported among white men ages 30 to 50. Some of the
men said risky sex was acceptable to them because they
believe antiretroviral drugs will keep them alive to
at least age 60 if they become infected with HIV, and
others said they were not worried about HIV infection
because they did not wish to live beyond age 60 due to
beliefs that older gay men are not sexually attractive
to or valued by younger gay men. Increasing use
of crystal methamphetamine, condom fatigue, and
widespread use of the Internet to find sex partners also
were linked with rising HIV rates among
Tucson’s gay men, according to the study.
