Transgender
activists rally in Hartford
Activists and
supporters rallied Sunday in Hartford, Conn., to protest
hate crimes against transgender people.
In recognition of
the seventh annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, more
than 50 activists and their supporters gathered in Hartford,
Conn., on Sunday evening to protest recent hate crimes
against transgender women in the city and across the
nation. On October 30 two women were verbally and
physically assaulted in Hartford's south end, News Channel 8
reported. Last month two transgender women were
severely beaten there. One suffered a crushed sternum,
and the other had a broken cheekbone. Police described
the incident as a hate crime.
Speakers at the
event asked that the criminals be brought to justice.
Some accused the Hartford Police Department of a slow
response to the crimes. Others said the victims were
treated poorly by officers. "So many people are
murdered within the transgender community, and the
murders are going unseen," Jerimarie Liesegang, director of
the TransAdvocacy Coalition, told Channel 8. "It is
important that we get visibility and police take it
seriously."
City leaders and
representatives from the Hartford Police Department
countered that the crimes were being taken very seriously.
