A study in the
September issue of the journal Sexually Transmitted
Diseases shows that gay and bisexual men commonly
use the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. Researchers
in San Francisco report that a telephone survey of gay and
bisexual men showed that 29% recently used Viagra and
that men with larger numbers of sexual partners,
higher levels of unprotected anal sex, who use
recreational drugs, or are HIV-positive are among those
mostly likely to take Viagra. Use of the erectile
dysfunction drug was not correlated to age, race,
or socioeconomic status, according to the study.
"Viagra use
appears to have become a stable fixture of the sexual
culture of men who have sex with men, crossing age, race,
and socioeconomic subgroups,” the researchers
conclude in their study. “Its use is associated
with a general behavioral risk pattern for HIV/STD
transmission." (Advocate.com)
