Project Runway designer Austin Scarlett discusses his spring line

Entertainment News 2005-09-15 Project Runway designer Austin Scarlett discusses his spring line Lauren David Peden: What was your inspiration? Austin Scarlett: A

Lauren David Peden: What was your inspiration?

Austin Scarlett: A coquettish, glossy boudoir feel, with wilted romantic-yet-chic ideas. Today's Jean Harlow does Jezebel.

What can we expect in terms of color, fabric, and texture?

We will see a lot of lightness, a little shine, flourishes of lace, and layered silhouettes.

What trends do you hope or predict will be big for spring?

A total embrace of fuller, flattering shapes, and the idea of being chic.

Did your travels this year influence your new collection?

I credit both a holiday in New Orleans (I loved its colors and shady, sensual ambiance), and a few trips to Hollywood, where I always feel a glorious surge of glamour.

What other show are you most looking forward to?

Marc Jacobs, Zaldy, Kevin Johnn, Oscar de la Renta.

What books are you reading?

Valmouth by Ronald Firbank and Collapse by Jared Diamond.

What music did you listen to while designing this collection?

This season I've been listening to Gershwin, Lindsay Lohan, Gwen Stefani, old recordings of Josephine Baker, and ragtime.

Any day-of-show rituals, meals, or habits?

Other than my usual two-pound box of pralines, Pellegrino purge, and quick five-hour mirror-through-tulle meditation session, I usually just get drunk after a show.

What's the difference between style and fashion?

Fashion is buying. Style is being.

Do you plan to watch The Apprentice: Martha Stewart?

I love Martha and can't wait to see her critique her apprentices. I respect anyone who is a technical perfectionist.

What about Project Runway?

Darling, I don't need to watch it; I lived it. But of course I will. (Lauren David Peden, via AP)
