Grey’s Anatomystar Isaiah Washington
is meeting with the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education
Network Monday in Los Angeles to discuss how the
actor can work with the group to ensure that
children realize the impact of antigay slurs like the
one Washington used in reference to hisGrey’scostar T.R. Knight.
Monday is the
first day of GLSEN’s fourth annual nationwide school
campaign "No Name-Calling Week."
GLSEN’s
2005 National School Climate Survey revealed that 75% of
LGBT students reported hearing derogatory remarks like
"faggot" or "dyke" frequently or often in
school.
In addition, only
41% of middle and junior high school students said they
felt very safe at school, and 69% of students reported being
harassed or assaulted in the previous year.
"No Name-Calling
Week" was created with Simon and Schuster
Children’s Publishing and is supported by almost 50
national education and youth-oriented service
organizations as well as corporations, including Cisco
Systems. The program aims to end name-calling by creating
a dialogue about the problem with students and
schools and by providing the tools to eliminate
bullying.
