suspended a host after he uttered antigay slurs on the air
May 1.
Luis Jimenez has
been barred from the airwaves for one month after
he and his cohosts performed a song titled “Las
Patas” (“The Dykes"). The song included
several gay slurs and ridiculed lesbians. Later in the
broadcast Jimenez introduced a stereotypical gay character,
whom he ridiculed and told, "Cállate, pato"
("Shut up, faggot").
Gay and Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation president Neil G. Giuliano
said May 4 that the actions taken against Jimenez were
timely and appreciated.
“GLAAD
applauds Univision Radio for doing the right thing and
taking responsible action against Jimenez’s
vulgar and bigoted comments," Giuliano said in a
statement. “We call on all Spanish-language
broadcasters to require the same accountability from all
their on-air talent.”
GLAAD plans to
meet with Univision Radio and Jimenez's production team on
May 17.
Prior to his
stint for Univision Radio, Jimenez spent 13 years as a DJ
for New York City station WSKQ-FM, where he was well known
for making homophobic comments.
The Luis Jimenez Show airs on Univision Radio
in markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and
