Poll: Asian-Americans Overwhelmingly Oppose Prop. 8

A new poll shows that the vast majority of California's Asian-Americans oppose Proposition 8, the state's ballot measure that would overturn the state supreme court's May ruling and outlaw same-sex marriage, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The poll found that 57% of likely Asian-American voters planned to vote against the amendment, while 32% said they would approve the measure. Asian-Americans in California also favored Sen. Barack Obama over Sen. John McCain for president 42%-24%, with 33% undecided -- almost identical to the poll's national Asian-American numbers of 41%-24% favoring Obama with 34% undecided.

The National Asian American Survey of nearly 1,900 Asian Americans statewide was administered in eight different languages, cost $300,000, and is the largest poll ever conducted of Asian-Americans both nationwide and in California.

"This is a really significant poll," Mark DiCamillo, director of the San Francisco-based Field Poll, told the Mercury News. DiCamillo noted that few pollsters can afford to do interviews in so many languages. "I'm sure I'll keep a copy of it for the next five years." (The Advocate)

VICTORY!!! Goes to show that the Majority is sane afterall. Mother nature speaks, and the people listen. The only "natural marriage" is that between a man and a woman. Anything else is but an abomination! Gen 2:22-25...

I'll help you out with my non-religious opinion. Since the earths creation, even before religion, it has been a man and woman. Same sex couples can not obtain the progression of life "naturally". Thus, indoctrinating society to accept something that is by natural law "unnatural". Now, why should we indoctrinate society to accept conduct when it doesn't enhance natural progression? Marriage is NOT a fundamental right. The only difference from their equal civil unions is the label of marriage, which is much more than a commitment between two people. It is the formation of a family which includes procreation and the rearing of children. The voters of California have already spoken once to preserve the definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman. It should remain so. We need to evaluate what standards our society want to live by and not a failing judicial system. Civil liberties are NOT civil rights

To the children of same-sex parents: You Are Bad. Doesn't matter if you are happy, well-adjusted, well cared-for, educated or secure. Doesn't matter if your parents are hard working, tax paying, law abiding or nice. Children brought up in loving, caring households are in effect being told as much by the proponents of Proposition 8, better known as The Protect Marriage Act or The Same-Sex Marriage Ban which will, if it passes, add a new amendment to the California Constitution: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California". By my reckoning it's 2008. What the hell does it matter who the eff marries who, if they are sane and in love (usually but not necessarily mutually exclusive characteristics) and capable of leading productive lives in society?

JP your "argument" that allowing marriage between same sex couples will end up leading to people marrying parents or siblings is a fine example of "slippery slope" wrong thinking. There are compelling genetic reasons why breeding with (and/or marriage) of close relatives is not a good idea. Take a look at certain Soviet/European royal families and hemophilia, and the study of high incidence of deaf people on Marthas Vinyard in the last century for example.In-breeding has known consequences..... and that is why it has been taboo in most cultures throughout human history. I have a strong suspicion that research into the facts behind a statement isn't a dominant trait in the yes on 8 crowd. I have yet to read any argument from the yes on 8 supporters that make a lick of sense.... If there is any hope for the Californian branch of the human race, Prop 8 will be a resounding NO. reply

If they are going to allow same-sex marriages then they must allow polygamous marriages. That is the only way to be fair. Afterall, polygamous relationships are made of consensual, loving adults that are God's children too...

I've been talking to people that I come across about Prop. 8, and unfortunately having to explain why Constitutional amendments to discriminate are the wrong way to go. I don't think that poll is accurate. Asians have a much greater respect for tradition than any other culture you could poll... what the poll show is that Asian-Americans WILLING TO TALK TO POLLSTERS (e.g. the Americans among us) favor equality. However, our parents, who would never take surveys or speak with pollsters, are not nearly so progressive. That's why we need to take the time to speak with them on this issue.
