Man Critically Injured in D.C. Bashing

Two Maryland residents were attacked during a robbery on Sunday evening in what may possibly be deemed a hate crime, Metro Weekly reported Thursday.

Two Maryland residents were attacked during a robbery on Sunday evening, in what may possibly be deemed a hate crime, Metro Weekly reported Thursday.

Police are still searching for four subjects who stole a set of car keys and $15 before fleeing the crime scene in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

Tony Randolph Hunter, 37 is reported to be on life support after suffering a laceration to the back of the head. Trevor Carter, 27, was released from a local hospital after being treated for a bruised jaw.

Lamont Joy, a friend of Hunter's, told Metro Weekly that the two men were on at D.C. gay club Be Bar to meet with friends, but they never showed up. Eric Rhodes, a friend of Hunter and Carter, told the Washington Blade that the suspects approached his friends as they exited a car.

"He said four guys came up and said, 'What’s up, what’s up,'" Rhodes said in the Blade. "Then the guys started swinging."

Carter told Rhodes that he ran to seek help, assuming Hunter was behind him.

The police department's gay and lesbian liaison unit said that the incident is classified as a hate crime because it was based on the victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation, and because it took place close to Be Bar. The police department will next determine whether the case will officially be classified as a hate crime. (The Advocate)

In Spokane, WA we've experienced a string of attacks on men perceived to be gay or bisexual over the last couple of months. We can't get the mainstream media to cover it, only our faithful Stonewall News. Most recently, a man was brutally beaten and sexually assaulted downtown. We need to remind our friends about how to stay safer. Make some noise. If your community is under attack, hold a vigil or protest and coordinate with other over-targeted, under-protected communities in your area. Every time a Transgender or LGB person is assault I feel sick with helplessness. We need to protect our families.

Everyone knows this area is not the safest area in DC and is still developing. At night residents do not walk out alone and/or with their dogs. The bar opened in this area for low rent since it is developing and needs to provide more security for the guests and/or safe parking. Everyone must use safety precautions when in a major urban area that has little traffic. Knowing that, no one should be injured like that and it is a sad situation. I hope the gun law in DC holds up so someone can protect themselves next time.

There have been at least two attacks near gay bars in Cleveland, OH recently. The Gay community needs to step up the pressure on elected officials to insure gay targeting ends.

...PERCEIVED masculinity. They're attacking, as you said, because they assume that a gay man cannot actually be masculine, and therefore not able to defend himself. While a temporary smart decision for the perpetrator, it also suggests specific targeting and therefore premeditation, which typically elevates the nature of the offense in the eyes of the courts...and ultimately becomes a bad decision for the perpetrator when their charges are relatively elevated and sentencing is extended.

A similar event happened in Ohio very recently. These crooks are targeting us because they assume gay people are weak. In the environment that these thugs are bred in survival depends on masculinity.
