marriage, according to an unofficial survey taken March 11.
The results represent an 8% increase over last year,
WPTZ in Montpelier reported Monday. Thirty-seven
percent of respondents are opposed to same-sex
marriage. State senator and Johnson State College political
science professor William Doyle administered the poll
and compiled the results, something he has
done every March for the past several years.
Nearly 7,000
people responded to this year's survey. The Doyle poll
is not a scientific survey but an annual sampling of views
by voters taking part in Town Meeting Day, which is
usually held on the first Tuesday in March for
citizens to discuss issues in their towns. Vermont's
annual Town Meeting Day is a 200-year tradition. (The
