Sex Citations Dampen Fire Island Fun

Two incidents involving men having public sex along the dunes of New York State's Fire Island resulted in National Park Service-issued citations that has the gay resort mecca buzzing.

Two incidents involving men having public sex along the dunes of New York State's Fire Island resulted in National Park Service-issued citations that has the gay resort mecca buzzing.

According to New York gay publication Next, one incident in the area known as Carrington Tract on June 15 produced a citation for disorderly conduct and another for possession of a controlled substance. Another incident in the same area on June 21 resulted in three citations for disorderly conduct.

Park Service representatives, who were responsible for the citations, said no arrests were made and there is no formal sting on gay sex in Fire Island, but added that the Fire Island National Seashore received extra funding this year that allows more patrol personnel. (The Advocate)

However distastful the idea of men fiddling with each other in the woods may be, we need to remember that getting the police out of the meat rack was a hard won fight earned forty years ago. The sex police were roaming through the bushes looking for violators. If men were out in the open then that's fair game. Either way, this is something we will address as a community. We don't need someone else's morality imposed on us by federal authorities. I'm told the raids will cease. Time will tell. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.

Public sex is not appropriate under any circumstances. While Fire Is alnd is, and will remain, a gay mecca; it is not a bath house surrounded by sand. As a proud gay man, I enjoy sex as much as the next person, but a little decorum is required in public. As the saying goes, 'get a room'.
