The story behind Thomas Beatie, a transgender man who gave birth to a girl on June 29, has been purchased by a British documentary production company, according to Variety.

Pregnant Man will be an hour-long documentary about Beatie and his wife, Nancy, who made headlines in April when he announced that he was pregnant with a girl. The documentary tells the story of Beatie's life, including his time as a Hawaiian beauty pageant contestant and his difficult childhood and adolescence as a transgender person.

September Films fought off rival bids from four other prospective companies, Variety reports. While distributors for the United States and Germany have not been confirmed, the documentary will air in the United Kingdom on Channel 4, and NBDtv/DCD Media is selling the international rights. Considering that Beatie claims not to be making any sort of political statement for equality, his willingness to open himself up to the media so intimately seems all the more suspect. He wasn't a public figure beforehand, why does he go out of his way to be one now? He would do well to clarify his intentions... this has become exactly the media freakshow he claimed to want to avoid in the first place.

continued... I am not saying they should hide, just that they should get with the movement and not cause people from outside the community to contuine to think of us as abnormal and unequal. As another reader commented on the last story, "...headlines like "Trans Man Gives Birth" only makes the gay movement appear ultra freaky and totally harms our fight for equality." I think that says it all, and I am willing to accept the backlash for agreeing with it...

The saga continues... I would think that with all the negative press, including from the community, that Beatie and partner would choose to fade into the background and attempt to live a quiet life and raise their child. Which is what most people assumed they wanted... I am glad they got their baby safe and sound, and hope they both remain healthy. But as it continues to be on the forefront, I begin to question the parent's motives for continuing to be in the press. Most gay people I know ask for equal rights and equal treatment. But simply by doing this documentary, they continue to ask the world into their business, therefore ASKING people to think of them as abnormal and different. The less this is stirred up, the quicker the negativity will settle down and the greater the chances that this little girl can have a happy life being happy that she has the parents she has that undoubtedly love her.
