Obama Taps Sen. Joseph Biden for Vice President

Weeks of intense speculation ended early Saturday morning, when Senator Barack Obama announced that he had selected Senator Joseph Biden Jr. of Delaware to be his running mate. CNN first reported the choice, which was disclosed to Obama supporters via a highly anticipated text message at 3:31 a.m. EST. Biden, 65, brings to the Democratic ticket a strong but not perfect record on gay rights accumulated since he was elected to the Senate in 1972. He received a score of 78 percent on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2006 Congressional Scorecard.

Weeks of intense speculation ended early Saturday morning when Senator Barack Obama announced that he had selected Senator Joseph Biden Jr. of Delaware to be his running mate.

In 2006, Biden voted against the federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Although he stated in 2003 that he believes same-sex marriage is inevitable, he currently supports civil unions that would grant the same legal rights as marriage. He voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.

As chairman of the influential Foreign Relations Committee, Biden supports ending the "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military. The outspoken Senator invoked first-hand observations of combat zones to criticize the policy in 2007 when he said, “Let me tell you something, nobody asked anybody else whether they're gay in those foxholes.”

However, Biden has yet to co-sponsor the Uniting American Families Act that would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to give same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents the same immigration benefits that legal spouses of U.S. residents receive.

Biden also supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act including protections for transgender Americans, and in 2002 he voted to add sexual orientation to the definition of hate crimes. He voted "yes" on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation in 2000.

Obama and Biden are scheduled to make their first public appearance together at a rally on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Biden will be the headline primetime speaker at this week’s Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, when the theme will be, “Securing America’s Future.” (Julie Bolcer, The Advocate)

MAGNIFICENT!!! Joe Biden brings strengths to the ticket in areas where Obama has limited experience; foreign affairs, etc. Senator Obama could not have made a better choice. Now all we need is Bill and Hillary Clinton to come out and ENTHUSIASTICALLY support Obama; bringing their constituancies with them, and we'll have an unbeatable ticket. It is essential for Obama to be elected president! McCain is nothing more than a Buch clone and we can't afford four more years of THAT! I have sent the first of what will doubtless be SEVERAL checks to Obama to assist with his campaign. God bless that fine American.

In the primaries I was a Kucinich supporter. As a white lesbian woman it bothers me when any one tells me that the marriage my wife and I's just had in CA. after 10 years together is any less valid or sacred than theirs. It pissed me off when Hillary said it, and when Obama said it. Black Vs. Female. Gay vs. Lesbian Vs. Bi Vs. Trans. We can go on complaining about whose had it worse and fighting over it. But all that creates is diverting our focus to anger, infighting, separation, and pessimism. We do need change, we need someone who supports ending DOMA and Don't Ask Don't Tell. Obama and Biden are the only ones that will get us closer. MCain supports Prop 8 and believes lgbt people shouldn't have adoption rights.

Okay, 2 things before me and my husband depart for downtown Denver to try and meet up with Oprah and Gayle for lunch. Senator Clinton MAY NOT have wanted to be on the ticket with Senator Obama. C'mon let's give this some real thought. And second, for a community that is always after the rest of America to be JUST A LITTLE more open-minded - there certainly are way too many of us who are VERY NARROW minded. As always, just keepin' it real. OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!

What's that smell? It's the Obama-Biden ticket warming up in the toaster. Obama knew what he needed to do to unify his party. I guess his ego just wouldn't allow him to consider Hillary Clinton as his running mate. Instead, he chose Joe Biden, a member of the Democratic Old Guard. So much for "change". With Hillary, he'd have had a fighting chance at victory; with Biden, he's toast, plain and simple. So get your butter knives ready, everyone. Guess what you'll be having for breakfast the morning after John McCain's victory?

My last word on the issue is that the Constitution has been in full effect for more than 220 years. The principle did not pop up overnight and the overnight change should never have been neccessary to make had people who hedge their duty by deferring to their god like Obama does on this issue. The principle of the matter is at the core of what this country was founded, and all I'm saying is why are we so quick to embrace someone who's taken the easy way on this issue that matters so much to our community when there are politicians out there who at rsik to their carreers, be they white, black, hispanic, etc. who haven't pulled their punches, and aquiessed to some idealogues idea of what "god" would want. And not only that, but act so proud about doing so. In matters of equal rights the Constitution should trump all the incarnations of god in this country, even Mr. Obama's.

Unfortunately, it very much is a BLACK & WHITE issue. Racism is why too many people are having such a hard time accepting Senator Clinton's loss. (Senator Obama WON the popular vote!) We can all sit here from now until doomsday and argue the merits of gay marriage, but the reality is that the majority of Americans have to get over thier bias at seeing 2 people of the same sex MARRIED & ultimately WITH CHILDREN. I understand and appreciate David's point, but this isn't going to happen in a few days, weeks or even years. Many Americans are having too difficult of a time with the idea of just seeing a BLACK MAN with his BLACK CHILDREN & WIFE inside the White House. You cannot always rely on intellectual reasoning to overcome RAW emotion/experience. Cause let's face it, if Americans cannot accept a BLACK FAMILY as residents of the White House - do you really think that we'll be any closer to seeing a GAY FAMILY inside the White House? Let's Keep it Real!

Difficulty of a task does not excuse the failure to follow the principles of the office. It's difficult for the police to investigate and solve crimes, but that is why they were created. Federal office holders in this country swear to uphold the Constitution as their primary task. If you fail in that task, and try to excuse that failure due to its level of difficulty, then you are merely a failure. Any other public servant who failed repeatedly to perform the primary task of their position would be fired. It seems clear (not black and white as Mr. Green would have us believe) to me that Obama is equally guilty of failure in this case as is almost everyother federal office-holder. The question to ask oneself is should we reward a failure when there are other people out there who would succeed if they weren't blocked at every turn by people like Obama.

I've read some of the comments here and as Rhianna would put it: "PULEEZE!" I cannot believe some actually believe that Senator Obama (as a BLACK man running for President) can ACTUALLY get up in front of all of America and start waving the flag in support of GAY marriage. As a gay Black man I understand Senator Obama's difficult journey to the White House. He's carrying baggage that Senator Clinton as well as Senator McCain never had to - and never will - have to consider! It's time for many members of our community to GET REAL and come clean regarding the TRUTH behind their own bias against Senator Obama. If Senator Obama loses this election because of a lack of support from the gay and lesbian community - it will only further DELAY our arrival at TRUE equality. If you disagree with any part of what I'm saying, check out the reaction to my latest novel examining racism and homophobia in America. Obama/Biden 2008! Peace!
