Man Confesses to Killing Gay NYC Student

Police have a confession from a 22-year-old man who claims he was behind the slaying of gay student Kevin Pravia, 19, over the weekend in New York City. The body of the Pace University student was discovered by his roommate early Saturday morning.

Suspect Jeromie Cancel confessed to police Monday, telling them he punched the sleeping teen in the face, wrapped an electrical cord around his neck, stuffed a plastic bag in his mouth, and then smothered him with a pillow. He told police he then sat down next to the body and watched Saw on his television.

"He's mentally imbalanced," Cancel's father, Jesus Soto, told the New York Post. "He seemed off-balance. He didn't seem right."

According to Cancel, he met Pravia following a party at about 6 a.m. Saturday morning in New York’s Union Square. Cancel claims he bought drugs from Pravia -- an allegation police told reporters they doubt -- before accompanying him back to his Chelsea apartment.

Cancel says the two were hanging out when Pravia fell asleep.

Police reported that Cancel made stole a cell phone, iPod, and laptop, which were later sold on the street. Cancel confessed to police after he was arrested Monday at his father’s home in Queens.

Soto told police he had been estranged from his son for more than a decade before Cancel made contact earlier this summer. After staying at his home briefly, Soto said, Cancel robbed him and disappeared. He says he didn’t see him again until Monday, when he arrived, bragging about killing someone.

“He said, ‘I just killed someone,’" Soto said. "He had no remorse. He had a big smile. Then he told me again he killed someone. I called the cops, and when they pulled up –– and he just turned to cops and told them he just killed someone."

Police told reporters Soto had said his son was with someone shortly before the cops arrived. That man took off on foot, and reporters say they’re uncertain whether police have any leads on that individual's identity. (The Advocate)

I don't care what this boy did in his spare time - he didn't deserve to die like this. And may the New York DA's office prosecute this guy to the fullest extent and get what he deserves for the rest of his life, however short that may be.

I see and hear about these things - Not JUST with LGBT. This is infecting all areas of our lives.. When are we going to finally WAKE UP!?. When is this going to finally make All Of Us stand up and Get Pissed Off??? Why do we allow the media and these aweful religious zealots to dictate the world we live in. We are All Equal in this life - Noone person above another. No government has truly been able to tackle this issue because people STILL believe that we are committing an abomination in our lifestyles - They are being told that it is "Ok to Kill us - instructed that this is a Mitzva to G-d. When will we finally stand up and say "ENOUGH" ??

The victims sexual procilivites have absolutely nothing to do with anything at all. Straight men who are sexually active are propped up as just "sowing their wild oats" or "playing the field". Gay men who are sexually active are portrayed as desperate people who "deserve what they get" whether overtly stated or subtly implied - which is exactly what the media is doing in this case. It's a classic double standard. This is a truly horrible crme and I hope it sends a wake up call to the gay community everywhere to be well advised to get to know who they bring home as best they can before they do and to NOT, under any circumstances - allow yourself to fall asleep in the pressence of a virtual stranger, no matter where you are. Some of the sickest and most dangerous people out there don't appear or act that way at all on the surface. Again, my condolences to his family and friends. Kevin - So sad your time hear ended so painfully but I sincerely hope your new journey is especially joyous.

Paul, I am sorry for your loss, and I agree, the press, and the accused, are trying to blame the victim. Even if he was promiscuous, that does not merit being murdered. Besides, in the eyes of far too many, a gay person can be celebate, and they still aren't considered human.

This is truly tragic. It doesn't have the drawn out quality of Matthew Shepard's more public murder but it is NO LESS HORRIFIC. For this young man to die in this cruel - evil - fashion, is a testament to how truly sick many people are in this world today. The man who commited this did so in a premeditated fashion with no remorse and should receive the death penalty. In the very least, he should never be allowed out in general society again. My condolences to his family and friends.

i knew kevin. he was such a sweet kid, with a smile that would melt your heart. recently i have read a lot of media coverage that has tried to shift the blame to him, saying things like he was "promiscuous", "dated lots of men", and he "partied hard". it doesnt matter who he dated, or how drunk he was. this was in no way his fault. it is entirely the fault of a cold hearted bastard, a truly evil person. id like to call attention to this slander the media is putting out there. the gay community should not stand for this, and action should be taken in defense of kevin's memory. love you always kevin xoxo. rip.
