More than 1,000
newspapers across the United States now accept
announcements for weddings or commitment ceremonies for
same-sex couples, an increase from only 69
publications in 2002. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance
Against Defamation made the announcement Monday, six years
after The New York Times accepted its first
same-sex wedding announcement.
According to
GLAAD, this year will be the first that every daily
newspaper in nine states and the District of Columbia will
print announcements for gay and lesbian couples.
However, fewer than a third of the 1,049 newspapers
actually have printed an announcement because they
have yet to receive a request. The organization has a list
of participating newspapers at GLAAD.org/Announcing Equality.
