McCain Suspends Campaign, Moves to Postpone Debates

Republican presidential nominee John McCain said Wednesday that he would suspend campaigning to focus on a “historic crisis" for the U.S. economy, reports Reuters. By suspending his campaign, McCain also seeks a delay in Friday’s planned presidential debate.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain said Wednesday that he would suspend campaigning to focus on a “historic crisis" for the U.S. economy, reports Reuters. By suspending his campaign, McCain also seeks a delay in Friday’s planned presidential debate.

“I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself,” he said in New York on Wednesday afternoon. “It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

McCain said he called Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama before making the public statement, asking for a “political free zone” until a deal is reached on the legislation for a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, according to MSNBC.

Senator Obama proposed a joint statement be made in support of a package to help fix the economy, while Senator McCain proposed pulling all political television advertisements from airing.

Obama also rejected McCain's suggestion that the debate be postponed. “In my mind, it’s more important than ever that we present ourselves to the American people and describe where we want to take the country and where we want to take the economy,” Obama said.

The economy has not been McCain's strongest suit, and his move is seen as an attempt by some to turn it into an opportunity to show he's the candidate of bipartisanship and action. Recent polls show Obama has an advantage with voters regarding the economy. (Kandice Day, The Advocate)

    Comment:

The debate is a hoax anyway--its a "non-profit" corporation ran by heads of the Democratic and Republican Parties. Almost all of the third party candidates are not allowed to debate, but now that McCain is leaving almost all of them noted they would take his place in a two person debate. Any of them would cream Obama in a debate...

John McCain has lost every shred of self respect. I used to hold him in such high esteem but his chronic lying and constant distortions are unpardonable. Did you the Katie Couric "Palin" interview earlier tonight? Ms. Palin is in way over her head and can't even answer a straightforward question. I was an undecided up until yesterday but have decided to vote Obama/Biden. Ms. Palin's interview with Katie confirmed I made the right choice. I was embarrassed for Sarah Palin and thought she'd be able to hold her own and answer the questions with factual information. Sadly she didn't or couldn't.

    Comment:

Mr. McCain has injected presidential politics into the bailout debate. Whether this was a deliberate political move or not, his actions are unhelpful and unwanted. His meddling is only going to exasperate tensions between Republicans and Democrats on the Hill. Any proposal will now rightfully be viewed with suspicion. Democrats will ask is this a ploy for McCain to take credit for a deal? McCain's credibility is already limited in light of the dishonorable campaign he has chosen to run. McCain is like the boy who cried wolf, after an ugly partisan GOP convention and a nasty blitz or outright lies we are now supposed to believe he is putting partisan politics aside.
