Gambia's President Vows to Kill Gays

Gambia's president on Thursday announced that gays, lesbians, and "criminals" have 24 hours to leave the country or face death. President Yahya Jammeh has said previously that he is seeking a crackdown even harsher than that in Iran, according to Afrol News.

"Foreigners are cordially welcomed in The Gambia, but not bad elements," he said at a rally outside Banjul, Gambia's capital.

He also ordered landlords and hotel owners to evict gays before a mass search is conducted by security forces.

In response, Peter Tatchell of British gay rights group OutRage! said the threats are no surprise.

"The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has a long history of homophobia and has promoted crackpot cures for HIV," Tatchell said in a press release. "He'll have to kill an awful lot of Gambians and foreign aid workers and tourists to get rid of gays and lesbians."

A government ousting of gays violates the African Union's Charter on Human Rights and could spur a withdrawal of international aid for Gambia. (The Advocate)

Good for Gambia! Don't kill them just kick them out! Keep it clean. Gays fail to realize that getting America to look gay-friendly makes America's enemies (which are many) hate you too. The selfish American gays with their policy of hate casues problems for others abroad. Gays in America don't want equal rights. They want to hate and oppress those who do not care for their choices. Gay American is the new KKK!!!!

Gambia is a beautiful and peace nation, it is a shame that this man iys destroying everything. And serious Duane Gambia is not the whole African continent so don't use this man's actions to judge everyone. And you are so ignorant for calling the entire continent of Africa backwards and even more ignorant for not wanting to know about the place where you fore fathers came from. Last time i checked America is not so great yea Bush didn't come out and say he was going to kill all gays but dnt forget about the don't ask don't tell policy in the military. Or the hell America put black people through for over 150years. Gambia is a very you nation and still making mistakes it is only 58yrs old and has only had 2 Presidents. So before you make ignorant comments and insult an entire continent educate yourself.

Anytime someone mention a word about your culture, you get offensive. You have no respect for any other culture but yours. I think you should conduct some research to find out how many 'born and raised' gays are there in Gambian, guarantee you will find the answer as, 0. All gays and lesbians are from other nation. The president believes Islamic law should rule Gambia, but because of his loving and kindness for the people, it is not. You don’t have to believe Gambian president cures HIV. I just came from there and I know just as all other witnesses, that his cure for HIV is legit. If you really want to find out the truth, I think you should go there instead of bickering about the shit. He is blessed with something scientists and doctors spend their entire life trying to discover and they could not. Pharmaceutical companies want to criminalize the president just to ensure that no one gets the cure for HIV/AIDS unless the discovery is from their laboratory. This is the honest truth.

Is there a way to contribute financially to help the "blacklisted" people of Gambia? If so please let it be known. I'm sure nobody at my job will have a clue... just like all the hangings in iran. They had no idea what was going on. If it's not on fox news or msnbc, it isn't really happening... it's just the gay guy being overly dramatic. At least we know that Yahya Jammeh is out there, so know Bush doesnt seem so bad...just vacant and horribly embarrassing.

I am doing all I can to help Gambian gays out of Gambia. They get a safe haven in Senegal, Ghana, and some are welcome in Holland. With just 100 Euro or 150 dollar we can save one person! I will make sure that at least 5 of them will be safe this week!

This is why, as a black gay American, I have no desire to "explore" my culture in Africa, Jamaica, or any other backwards country. We think we need to fight the war on terrorism in the Middle East, well I think they need to be keeping their finger on the pulse of the hotbed of hatred and Islamic intolerance in Africa...Kill them gay folk! Yea, that will just fuel tourism to rich Africa!

President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia is clearly a profoundly ignorant man. It must suck living in a place that had no connection to the real world. Sad little pathetic man.
