Hundreds of gays
and lesbians have marched through Bucharest,
Romania, in a show of pride.
Thousands of
people gathered along the two-mile route. Some spectators
cheered; others jeered.
Hundreds of
police patrolled the march. The atmosphere was tense, but
there were no reports of arrests. At a similar event last
year about 140 people were arrested.
Earlier Saturday,
supporters of the New Right antigay movement marched to
protest homosexuality.
The Romanian
Orthodox Church, the dominant church in the country, opposes
homosexuality. But the government decriminalized
homosexuality in 2001. (AP)
