The sponsors of a proposed ballot initiative to ban same-sex
marriage in California say that Republican
presidential nominee John McCain has given them his
support, reports the Associated Press. ProtectMarriage.com
told the AP that its campaign received an e-mail from
McCain in which he stated his support of their cause
and applauded their efforts to “recognize
marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman.”

The Associated Press reported that in 2006,
McCain supported an unsuccessful ballot measure to ban
gay marriage and deny domestic partners spousal rights
in his home state of Arizona. McCain has opposed the
Federal Marriage Amendment in the past, saying the matter of
