McCain Voices Support for California Ban on Gay Marriage

The sponsors of a proposed ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage in California say that Republican presidential nominee John McCain has given them his support, reports the Associated Press. ProtectMarriage.com told the AP that its campaign received an e-mail from McCain in which he stated his support of their cause and applauded their efforts to “recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman.”

The Associated Press reported that in 2006, McCain supported an unsuccessful ballot measure to ban gay marriage and deny domestic partners spousal rights in his home state of Arizona. McCain has opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment in the past, saying the matter of marriage should be left up to the states. (The Advocate)

It's best not to comment on something one does not fully understand...gay people are not so desperate for marriage..they just want equal rights and benefits that come with a legal union... With or without marriage, there will always be gay people and there better things that leaders should focus on than peoples personal issues.

Should not be a surprise to anyone. Especially after McCain made a big deal over meeting with Rev. Billy Graham and his son the other day. He is pandering to that conservative base. So much for being a "maverick."

McCain says that he supports a ban, the day AFTER the Arizona Senate took it off the ballot. It's as if even John McCain doesn't really care about banning gay marriage.

Goodby John. Soon you will be relegated to the dustbin of history. You just lost California.

Of course Sen. McCain gave his support to this discriminatory ban...chalk up another reason he should not be our next president.
