Saturday will
mark nightclub G-A-Y’s last night of drinking and
dancing in Astoria, Central London, the U.K.’s
Times Online reported Thursday.
Jeremy Joseph,
the club’s promoter, told the Times about the
importance of places like G-A-Y to gay men, young and
old. “It was the first place they went to when
they came out -- or before they came out; the place
they went to be themselves if they were having problems with
families or colleagues. I've even had messages such as
‘I met my boyfriend ten years ago at G-A-Y. If
you hadn't been there, we'd never have met.’”
G-A-Y, formerly
Bang! has welcomed Kylie Minogue, Madonna, and Cyndi
Lauper to its stage since its opening in 1976.
While saddened,
Joseph is proud of the nightclub’s 32-year run and
refutes allegations that his business was suffering because
the club was "outdated." “We've survived
longer than any other gay club," Joseph told the
Times. "Does that sound unsuccessful to
you?” (The Advocate)
