Minnesota to Follow Mass. and Calif. in Same-Sex Marriage?

Minnesota’s gay and lesbian couples have begun organizing a lawsuit similar to the ones that overturned same-sex marriage bans in Massachusetts and California, the Twin Cities’ Daily Planet reported Sunday.

Minnesota’s gay and lesbian couples have begun organizing a lawsuit similar to the ones that overturned same-sex marriage bans in Massachusetts and California, the Twin Cities’ Daily Planet reported Sunday.

“Gays and lesbians face legal costs to get legal documents such as hospital visitation, care decisions, and so on -- all that are granted by marriage,” Duane Benson told the Planet. Benson and his partner, Doug, are one of the couples looking to sue the state.

“We want a critical mass of couples involved,” Doug told the Planet. So far, the Bensons are joined by three other couples and are hoping for a group of nearly 30 couples by August 15 in order to bring a successful suit.

While couples who sign on can expect to pay up to $1,000 in legal costs, the Bensons think it’s well worth it. “In Doug's and my case, we pay $3,000 more a year in taxes because we are not spouses,” Duane told the Planet.

And it’s not just about the money for this Minnesota couple. “The point we want to make is to make sure equality is pursued wherever we can pursue it,” Doug told the Planet. “Because we can’t sit around waiting for this to happen. We want this to become a reality here at home, and we are trying through the courts as well as through the legislature…. We have waited long enough.” (The Advocate)

Eventually all 50 states and PR will allow gay marriages. We just need to show them that 2 gay people CAN be monogamous. I've been with my partner of 2 years here in Denver, CO. We need to show the country NOT allowing gay marriage is DISCRIMINATION!!!!

I hope all works out for the couples of Minnesota. MN might be next then. This would be great as Minnesotans won't have to move to San Fran or Mass. to get married. Justice will soon be served, we hope.

Oh boy, I dearly wish them well and I hope there are enough couples to file the suit. I live in South Dakota and I know our homophobia and bigotry don't stop at the state line. Since I am a priest I can't marry - yet- or I would be joining the group--except I would have to find a fiance by Aug. 15.

Wow, maybe I left MN too soon. Oh wait, it was in a nick of time. It got cold and started snowing. I hope this happens in MN. The people can be open-minded. I warn all the gay and lesbian couples in advance, getting married at Mall of America is not cute.

It would be so helpful if Minnesota added it's name to the list of states that have marriage equality!

The ball is rolling and there is no stopping it! First, Massachusetts; then California and now, hopefully, Minnesota. My hat is off to those fighting this great fight. Slowly but surely we are winning the hearts and minds of fair minded Americans and the hateful messages of the right-wing, lunatic fringe are no longer carrying sway. Perhaps Kansas would like to get on the marriage bandwagon... The Rev. Phelps can then join two gay men in wedlock...

Having lived in Minnesota for the past four years, after having lived in San Francisco for the eight years prior, I would never say never about same-sex marriage happening here. But...given what I see around the state and what I've personally experienced, I can't see it happening here sooner than some other states. Minnesotans are generally "live and let live" but only up to a certain point.
