Police Investigate Bay Area Rape, Theft as Possible Hate Crime

Police are investigating a brutal crime in which a woman was jumped by four men, taunted for being a lesbian, and repeatedly raped, then left naked outside of an abandoned apartment building in the San Francisco Bay area.

Police are investigating a brutal crime in which a woman was jumped by four men, taunted for being a lesbian, and repeatedly raped, then left naked outside of an abandoned apartment building in the San Francisco Bay area.

The woman was attacked on December 13 after she stepped out of her car, which had a rainbow bumper sticker, according to the Associated Press.

"It just pushes it beyond fathomable," Richmond police lieutenant Mark Gagan said to reporters. "The level of trauma -- physical and emotional -- this victim has suffered is extreme."

One of the men reportedly approached the 28-year-old woman as she crossed the street, hit her with a blunt object, forced her to remove her clothing, and then, along with three others, raped her for 45 minutes.

When the men saw another person approaching, they forced her into her car and took her to a burned-out building, where she was raped again. They left her naked on the street, taking her car and her wallet. She sought help from a nearby resident, who took her to be examined at a hospital. Her car was found abandoned two days later.

The woman said she did not know the men, but two of them answered to the names "Blue" and "Pato." She estimated their ages ranging from late teens to about 30. Richmond police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest.

Hate crimes have been on the rise nationally. There were 1,460 hate crimes in 2007, according to the FBI, an increase of 45 such crimes over 2006. In both years, 16% of hate crimes targeted people based on their sexual orientation. (Michelle Garcia, Advocate.com)

Joseph in Texas: excellent comment. I'm a strong believer in the justice of capital punishment. Unfortunately, just bringing it up these days allows certain individuals to label you a racist, fascist, or "insensitive". In addition to this crime being a hate crime against LGBT people, we know that the attackers are 3 latinos and 1 black. So if the victim is white, it becomes a double hate crime. Because of the teachings of people like Pastor Warren and the LDS church, a lot of these homophobic guys actually think that lesbians can be "converted" to heterosexuality through forced intercourse. So after beating her up and covering her with bruises, they gang raped and sodomized her. How pathetic.

Here is a situation where prison for life is not enough! Execution via the judicial system would forever stop these ass holes and send a strong message. It will never take away the terror or trauma that their victim suffered and will suffer for the rest of her life but it will make sure that they will never hurt any one else. I have had a gay friend murdered due to their type of violence borne out of "christian" teachings. Enough is enough. Aren't we tired of turning the other cheek while we sit on our hands?

BradK, I agree. I think attacks will become more common..... Obama did what he needed to do to get elected. I don't think he will be the great savior the GLBT community thinks he will be. I am very sorry for the poor woman that was so brutally attacked. Nobody should ever have to endure that. I live in Texas and that state may not have a stellar record on GLBT rights but, I am allowed to protect myself.

Words simply can't convey the amount of sadness, anger, and disgust that I have after learning about this. This is most certainly a hate crime, and it was an act of sexual terrorism. Do you see what happens when militant religious fanatics preach hate to the masses, using their bible as justification? This poor lady was minding her own business, causing no harm, and was viciously targeted by people who are no different than Klansmen. My heart goes out to the victim. Though I don't know her name, she is in my thoughts, and I hope with all my heart that the authorities find these guys. And then give them the longest possible sentence in a CA State Prison. The Federal government has YET to pass a comprehensive hate crime bill that covers LGBT people.

Thank you for reporting this story. I have warned every GLBT person I know since I heard about this. My heart goes out to this young person and I wish her and the people who love her healing. Since Rick Warren purports to "love gay people" I know he will rouse the masses at Saddleback church ( and all people everywhere) to donate as furiously to the reward fund to catch these monsters as he did to get people to donate to pass prop H8. Also, here's an opportunity for Obama to speak out and educate the nation about hate crimes toward the GLBT community. Or, they can both be silent. I am watching closely. Let's catch these sub-humans before they hurt anyone else.
