The Presidential Proclamation issued Monday on behalf of Pride month contains an erroneous claim. "I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration," reads the proclamation.

According to Bill Clinton's Presidential Library archives, Roberta Achtenberg was nominated as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity on February 2, 1993.

President Clinton also nominated Bruce Lehman on April 23, 1993, as Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks.

Both Achtenberg and Lehman were openly gay and Achtenberg went on to become the first gay person to receive U.S. Senate confirmation while Lehman was the first gay man to be confirmed by the senate.

Reached for comment by The Advocate , Achtenberg said, "This was an easy mistake to have made. There was nothing but the most gracious treatment offered to me by the president and his transition team." Achtenberg served on an agency review team for HUD during President Obama's transition into the White House.

The White House press office did not respond to an inquiry in time for this post.

UPDATE : The White House has sent the following clarification:

"President Obama remains the first president to have openly LGBT candidates confirmed by the Senate during the first 100 days of an Administration."

You say potato...look the piont here is not who was appointed or affirmed when, or wether Gay pride is being blurted out in a sentence tha a niice 28 year old speech writer added in the text or proclaimed officially by which administration..(We all know June is LGBT pride month)...it's the fact that the Obama administration thinks it's enough because Bush didn't. It's not enough until what comes out of his mouth and other politician's mouths equals full federal civil rights that are equal with all other american citizens. PERIOD.

Chris Sullivan -- The president cannot repeal laws unilaterally. It takes action from Congress. Congress will move with the voters tell them to. So, take your anger and do something constructive with it. Lobby your congressmen and senators. Work with your local governments to change things at that level. Get active in politics yourself. In other words, quit the name calling and fit-pitching, and do something.

Mawm @ 11:28 -- Please read what I wrote again. I said we need to keep the pressure on, and we need to keep our issues front an center. I did not say anything about being satisfied with what we've seen. But, we do need to act all grown up, quit calling each other names, and work together to make all our politicians keep their promises. But honestly -- declaring Obama to have completely lied to all of us, after 19 weeks of dealing with the mess left by 8 years of those who actively hate us is hardly realistic.

Yeah Bill "REALLY"... it seems Obama has plenty of time for all sorts of things while he is dealing with the list you mentioned and we have been waiting for too damn long and we've had to deal with insulting gestures along the way (Donnie McClurkin, Rick Warren etc.) So, yeah... REALLY! I wonder how he would feel if "Civil Unions" were all a President was willing to afford his interracial parents? I wonder how he would feel if he were deemed good enough to die for his country but not good enough to live his life with honesty while serving? I wonder how he would feel if religious organizations were always given exemptions to be racist as they are allowed to be homophobic? I wonder how he would feel if he didn't have any of the Federal protections he takes for granted that GLBT can not? And when it is convenient, he has nothing to say! Not a single word on the judges decision over Prop 8. Yeah, Bill.. REALLY!

Yeah, WHATEVER! So he did it in under 100 days - that wasn't the point! He made a factually inaccurate assertion now attempts to "spin" it? Try doing something of REAL importance - like repealing DADT, DOMA etc. You know, the things you PROMISED TO DO! A cabinet level appointment or Supreme Court nominee would have been impressive - these token gestures and the more tedious "proclamations" are NOT ENOUGH!

This Morning on the View, Elizabeth said the liberals were not holding Obama's feet to the fire, like they were the conservatives. This is partially true, we are unpleased with him, but yet still, no one says anything to Obama. The President is starting to lose my support.

Obama is not even a good liar. It's just that so many LGBT heard what they wanted to hear when he promised movement on our issues, all the while forging alliances with right-wing bigots that delivered him the fundie vote in 08. Don't listen to Obamabots like Another Bill. They keep repeating the line "Obama has soo much to do right now he can't be bothered with our civil-rights". Idiots like him are perfectly satisfied with Easter Egg Rolls and False Proclamations.

The first time in 8 years a President has noticed Pride, and still the children complain. Achtenberg was nominated in the first 100 days of Clinton's administration -- but not confirmed, and therefore not appointed. I'm all for keeping the pressure on Obama. I completely agree with keeping our issues front and center. But we need to ratchet down the temper tantrums. It's 19 weeks into this administration, with a depression, two wars, and Korea launching missiles and detonating nuclear bombs -- and we are bitching because of a nuance in the first Presidential Pride Proclamation in almost a decade? Really? Wow...
