Shooting Suspect Blames Victim's Gender Expression

The suspect in a Memphis shooting that left a trans woman hospitalized in critical condition last Wednesday blamed the victim for "misrepresenting" her gender, reports the Commercial Appeal .

Police say Terron Taylor told them he shot Kelvin Denton in the neck and nose because he felt Denton misled him about her gender.

The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition issued a newsletter Tuesday urging Shelby County authorities not to permit the use of the "trans panic" defense.

Taylor, 18, is being held on $500,000 bond.

Thanks Khyri. I agree, an acknowledgment would have been nice. But I'm glad to see the errors have since been corrected.

For those confused by Gwen and Hillary's comments, the pronouns used in the article were changed between the times of posting of those two comments, and "trans woman" substituted for the word "man" in the first sentence. It would have been nice of The Advocate to acknowledge the article edit, though.

Ok all - re-read the second line again. It says that Taylor (the shooter) shot at Denton (the victim) because "he felt Denton misled him [Taylor] about her gender." Sounds ok to me - maybe awkwardly phrased, but not wrong. That said - tragic and two young lives damaged/ruined by ignorance.

My apologies for the use of the word "murder" in my previous comment. I meant to use the word "shooting".

For an LGBT newspaper reporter the author Julie Bolcer certainly seems sadly lacking in understanding of transgender people and their issues. She can't even get the pronouns correct... the victim in this case presented HERself as female and therefore the correct pronoun to use is HER not him. This is a very offensive and disrespectful way to comment on the murder of a trans woman. A few classes in transgender sensitivity seem to be in order for Julie.

Michelle: The term "gender expression" refers to any way one presents gender to the world. That includes butch and femme, to be sure, but expressing some aspect of being trans (whether it is presenting as the so-called "opposite sex" or as both/neither) is still a part of gender expression.

I'm a trans issue supporter. But forgive me for me being confused. What about the way the article is worded so I can avoid it? Is it the headline? "Gender Expression"? I usually think of gender expression as butch/femme not trans. I can see how that could be offensive. Most of the article is simply relaying what was said in the original article and police.

The article's author could have done a little digging and found out some additional information, such as this is at least the fourth attack on a trans woman in Memphis in the last few years, which includes at least 2 murders.

    Comment:

As a transgender woman, I am offended by the wording in this "article". Is Mr. Julie Bolcer on loan from the RNC ? Well, I guess we (TG's) should be happy that yet another murder was even reported on this site. I think we forget who it was that decided to bash back 40 years ago at the Stonewall.
