Gay rights activist
Cleve Jones announced plans on Sunday for a march on Washington
to demand full equality for LGBT citizens, reports the
Associated Press.
The march, scheduled for October 11, will coincide with
National Coming Out Day, which falls on a Sunday this
year.
"We seek nothing
more and nothing less than equal protection in all matters
governed by civil law in all 50 states," Jones said in
Salt Lake City, where he served as grand marshal of Utah's
pride festival, just blocks from the headquarters of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jones, who worked
alongside slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk and founded the
AIDS Memorial Quilt, made specific reference to the Mormon
Church's role in supporting Prop. 8, which overturned legal
same-sex marriage in California.
"I've got a
message for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints," he said. "I've got two words from
California ... I've got two words for the prophet ... Thank
you. Thank you for uniting us. Thank you for galvanizing
us."
While some activists
have questioned the strategy of holding a national march, Jones
maintained in an interview on Friday that events including a
new president, Prop. 8, and the success of the film
Milk
make now the right time to launch a new chapter in the LGBT
civil rights movement through the vehicle of a national
march.
