Stars Toast for L.A.'s Neediest

The Eighth Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, held last Saturday at the Los Angeles home of Susan Harris and Hayward Kaiser, was its typical celebrity fest.

The Eighth Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, held last Saturday at the Los Angeles home of Susan Harris and Hayward Kaiser, was its typical celebrity fest. The setting sun cast a golden glow on so many recognizable faces at the cocktail reception you would be forgiven for mistaking a commoner for someone from The Hills . Lance Bass appeared smitten with his dark-haired date; Eve, sporting long golden locks, stuck to the periphery, while Mark Wahlberg, proving you can take the guy out of South Boston but you can't completely turn him Hollywood, stood in a throng of people close to the bar, wearing a gray T-shirt, jeans, and his phone clipped to his belt. Angie Harmon and her QB husband Jason Sehorn loomed a few inches over from Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Amanda Bynes, Chelsea Handler, and the cast of Entourage .

Chrysalis is a 25-year-old nonprofit organization that helps homeless and economically disadvantaged people in greater Los Angeles find employment through job-preparation classes, mentoring, and access to everything from interview clothing to bus passes and fax machines.

The evening's three-course charity dinner event, emceed by Family Guy 's Seth MacFarlane, honored the good work and social consciousness of Entourage creator Doug Ellin as well as Milk producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen (pictured below). MacFarlane's hilarious roast of everyone from attendee Courtney Love to the notably absent Jeremy Piven helped raise over a half million dollars for Chrysalis. The last pledge of the night came when MacFarlane matched a $15,000 donation and made good on a promise to jump in the pool with his clothes on. He turned down a more lucrative offer to do it naked, saying, "I'm not going to show you my penis."

Even charity has its limits.
