Sen. Reid: No Sponsors for DADT

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid speaking at a press conference Monday said he has no plans to introduce a bill to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" in the Senate. "I haven't identified any sponsors," he said. "My hope is that it can be done administratively."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid speaking at a press conference Monday said he has no plans to introduce a bill to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" in the Senate.

"I haven't identified any sponsors," he said. "My hope is that it can be done administratively."

A Democratic aide later clarified that Reid was speaking about the possibility of using an executive order to suspend discharges or perhaps halting enforcement of the policy by changing departmental regulations within the Department of Defense.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has continually said in recent months that President Barack Obama believes the only "durable solution" to repealing the military's gay ban would be to do so through legislative action.

Senator Reid also indicated that he is waiting on the House of Representatives to take action on the bill that was introduced there in March.

"If the House moves on this," he said, "I would be happy to take it up."

And this is a surprise? President Obama says pretty words, & we worship at his feet. I remember he mentioned us in his inaugural address, & my friends swooned. He invites LGBT families to the White House Easter Egg hunt, & we kiss his ring. He declares July Gay Pride month, & we pat him on the back. Give me a break. Match your words with substantive action buddy.....stop the expulsion of our LBGT brothers & sisters from the military now! You have the power to issue an executive order until Congress takes up the matter. Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi have no intention of advancing DADT repeal legislation as the topic is too politically volatile. Ironically, Dick Cheney is more supportive of the right to marry than is Obama, Reid, Pelosi or Clinton. It's time for the community to demand that our elected officials mandate equal rights & opportunity for everyone. If you think Obama will suddently make this happen, you're going to be sorely disappointed

This is obviously a failed policy that needs to be overturned as soon as possible. How many soldiers have been endangered by the intercepts that haven't been translated due to a shortage of Arabic linguists? If Obama and the Congress don't act swiftly to abolish this bigoted and failed policy, they won't have earned this majority and gay Americans will work hard to see them lose it. We've already lived under Republican ideology and survived--if the GOP and the Democrats have the same attitude about gay civil rights, we might as well get the Republicans back in office. At least we'd spend less.

I have to add a P.S.... Once Al Franken is certified as the new Senator from Minnesota; won't that give the Democrats 60 Senators? THAT would be a filibuster-proof majority which would allow them to pass ANY legislation they want. THEN let's see what excuse they offer up for no action on LGBT issues! The Republicans don't give two hoots about 'bipartisanship'.. Why should the Democrats?

Just another broken promise. Appeal to us to get our votes; then throw us under the bus. I expect nothing from Obama and that probably just what we'll get! Harry Reid is right about not wanting to introduce legislation without co-sponsors. The Democrats have put all their political bets on Obamas stimulus plan to get the economy moving. IF it works and they get a greater congressional and senatorial majority in 2010; they may take up the case of LGBT equality. BEFORE then, however; I expect no concrete action whatsoever.

The Dems are playing Hot Potato. The President & Congress are passing the buck to the other. The Dems promised us action once they got majorities in the Senate & the House. Then they made us wait & promised us action once they got the presidency. Now, after getting ALL they wanted, they're not doing squat. If the Dems won't repeal DADT, the repeal of which is supported OVERWHELMINGLY by the public, then the Dems are good for NOTHING.

Reid is a Mormon and therefore probably not in any big hurry to do ANYTHING that might benefit the LGBT community. The current stance of the Democrats appears to be one of finger-pointing between groups. Obama says it's up to Congress. Pelosi says the House can't get it on the agenda and Reid just says "not interested". But then if we try to challenge in court, because the Legislative and Executive branches refuse to do anything, then the Obama Administration steps in and opposes us there, saying the courts aren't the write place. Basically they just don't want it repealed. Period.

@michaelandfred: you're right. At least the republicans are up front about their disdain for the LGBT community. Democrat's words say they support us, while their actions show their disdain. We are just about due for another "pep talk" about how much the Democrats support civil rights, so that we'll be satisfied until the next set of actions show how they really feel. Isn't this the definition of an abusive relationship? Hurt your partner, then turn around and say how much they mean to you, and how you are always by their side. Then, another round of abuse, followed by more nice talk. I feel like I'm in some Lifetime movie that won't end!!

Change we can believe in? Yeah, right! Keep your check books in your pockets next time ladies and gentlemen. At least with the Republicans they say up front they are not going to support us. And just think, two more months and they'll start campaigning for 0'12........

Reid is a cowardly idiot, but why aren't more of you directing your anger at Obama? He could end the dischares right now with executive order. And to all those Obots who shout that the President can't do that because it is law, you are lying. He has huge latitude within the armed forces. Besides, he has no problem defying a court order to release the detainee abuse photos. Reuters: "last month the Obama administration had said it would comply with a court order to release the pictures by May 28, saying legal options for appealing the case had been limited. But Obama shifted gears after senior military commanders and some members of Congress expressed misgivings about the potential for the photos to generate violence"....So there you are. He has no problems defying the law and using the Justice Dept to spin the legality of it. Why can't he do that for DADT? Polls are showing that even conservatives now support allowing LGBT to serve openly. Could it be that Obama is homophobe?
