say the ban is because of the film's R rating, not its gay
content.
According to the
Redding Record Searchlight
, pride organizers originally told city officials that their
film selection for the city-owned outdoor theater would be
youth- and teen-friendly. Officials afterward learned that
Milk
is rated R.
"I think it's
common sense," Redding official Gerry Kersten told the
newspaper. "If you're going to show a movie anyone can
see, obviously it needs to be appropriate for all
ages."
Pride organizer Mary
St. John acknowledged that her group erred, although she said
they are disappointed. "It's our mistake,
really," St. John said. "We were unaware of the
city's policy that says movies shown outdoors must be
[rated] G."
