Milk Too Racy for Redding Pride

Officials in Redding, Calif., forbade a screening of the Academy Award-winning film Milk before an LGBT pride celebration on June 27, but city officials say the ban is because of the film's R rating, not its gay content.

Officials in Redding, Calif., forbade a screening of the Academy Award-winning film Milk before an LGBT pride celebration on June 27, but city officials say the ban is because of the film's R rating, not its gay content.

According to the Redding Record Searchlight , pride organizers originally told city officials that their film selection for the city-owned outdoor theater would be youth- and teen-friendly. Officials afterward learned that Milk is rated R.

"I think it's common sense," Redding official Gerry Kersten told the newspaper. "If you're going to show a movie anyone can see, obviously it needs to be appropriate for all ages."

Pride organizer Mary St. John acknowledged that her group erred, although she said they are disappointed. "It's our mistake, really," St. John said. "We were unaware of the city's policy that says movies shown outdoors must be [rated] G."

Even if the MPAA did give out equal ratings for straight and gay content, I can't help but picture Milk as a PG-13 because it's what these Oscar bait biopics with any complexity in them tend to be rated. That said, I'd like to approach the "G-rated question". A major cultural shift needs to take place first. A shift from "gay themes" to "gay characters", from "these dudes are gay" to "this guy likes this guy". Ok, there is no such thing as a film with straight themes because it's so ingrained in our society. But I look at something like Disney's Aladdin. As a period piece, historical fantasy, what-have-you... Total wash-out. I knew this in middle school. But there is the contemporary fairy tale aspect, presenting current norms. And once day that will include open gay characters. But it's decades off. The Hall of Presidents got integrated before the Disney Princess club.

Very sad; but according to this, it is the Pride organizers fault: they promised the film would be youth and teen friendly, and like it or not, "Milk" is R-rated. Now, "Victor/Victoria" comes to mind, and I think that has a PG-rating, if memory serves. But Michael from Miami is correct: there's no way to get any gay-themed movie into such a screening. The cold-hard facts is, something this public, you either play by the city's rules or you don't play at all. Way to go, Redding Pride Organizers; ya biffed it big time.

This would be funny if it werent so sad. The rating thing is just an excuse, anyone who knows anything about movies knows that most gay themed films are going to rated R, or at the least PG-13. I cant even think of a G rated gay themed film.

"Movies shown outdoors must be rated G".......well I live in the Bible Belt and they have shown "nudist colony", nudies, and pornos at drive-ins since the 60's.....what world are we living in that such censorship takes place this day and age? If this were happening in Cuba, we would shake our heads and agree that this is unacceptable and not something that WE would allow. But apparently, we do......AND apologize for it.

Wow, that is amazing. "Because of the R rating." For God's sake, a few weeks ago I watched Milk suring a school-sponsored movie night at my Catholic university in an auditorium with stain glassed windows depicting the apostles.

The problem is not so much the city of Redding as much as MPAA. The city may be in a catch 22; MPAA are the real bigots. I am sure that if the genitals were being shown being cut off, as opposed to caressed, they would not have a problem with "G". After all, it's a reality of American life. But a gay scene? God forbid, where would the world come to...

As a film producer, I am committed to producing commercial quality film to the GLBT audience. And, as a matter of fact, most of my films are G rated. I think in eight projects there are exactly two love scenes that could possibly give a PG or an R rating. You can bet I will be fighting the MPAA if they have the balls to try to put a scarlett letter on my product when we go into production, simply because the characters and themes have content relevent to the gay community. If I understand correctly the City officials object to an "R" rated movie being shown at an OUTDOOR theater where anyone can see the film. (Whether they paid to get into the drive-in or didn't pay & watch it from outside of the drive-in.) Redding is friendly small to medium sized town at the base of Mt Shasta, far away from a large urban center in Northern CA. Over the past 25 years I've enjoyed camping and boating on Lake Shasta every summer. It's absolutely beautiful there. I am more surprised that the City of Redding is letting Gay people have a Pride event. Way to go Redding! I am proud of my Redding Gay brothers and sisters. Have fun!
