The Log Cabin
Republicans of New York City chapter on Monday morning
announced their endorsement of Mayor Michael Bloomberg for
reelection in November, releasing a video and statement that
cited his record of economic leadership and strong support for
equality.
"Log Cabin New York
City is proud to stand once again with a man who has proven
himself time and again to be the strong leader and ally of
equality our city needs," said Log Cabin's caucus
representative Gregory T. Angelo. "The government and
residents of New York City face one of the greatest financial
crises in the history of the city. We need a mayor with a
proven record of results, a history of accomplishment and an
outspoken stance on equality for all New York taxpayers."
In recent weeks, as the
leadership crisis in the New York state senate has threatened
prospects for marriage equality legislation, Bloomberg has
urged legislators to resolve their differences so that a vote
can take place on the same-sex marriage bill.
Bloomberg, a
Boston-born billionaire who made his fortune as the founder of
Bloomberg LP, was elected mayor in 2001 and 2005 as a
Republican before he became an independent in 2007. His support
for marriage equality has become more vocal over the years, and
he also has led implementation of a safe-schools initiative for
public schools.
Bloomberg appealed to
the city council to extend voter-approved term limits in
October so that he could run for a third term.
