No Case Against Ore. Mayor Sam Adams

Oregon's attorney general has ruled after a five-month investigation into the sex scandal surrounding Portland mayor Sam Adams that there is no credible evidence the openly gay mayor had sex with Beau Breedlove during their 2005 relationship before Breedlove turned 18.

Oregon's attorney general has ruled after a five-month investigation into the sex scandal surrounding Portland mayor Sam Adams that there is no credible evidence the openly gay mayor had sex with Beau Breedlove during their 2005 relationship before Breedlove turned 18.

Adams had been under investigation for an affair he admitted to having with Breedlove when he was 18. Though the two met while Breedlove was still 17, Adams maintained the relationship didn't turn sexual until Breedlove was legal.

Atty. Gen. John Kroger said, among other things, that Breedlove is not a credible witness, pointing to his recent seminude spread in the gay erotic magazine Unzipped .

In May, The Oregonian published an article saying that phone records indicated Adams had called Breedlove 33 times before his 18th birthday, seeming to contradict the mayor's claims that the former legislative intern had pursued a relationship with him.

That article kicked a statewide recall effort into high gear. Days later, the same paper urged him to resign -- more than 500 volunteers attempting to collect the 50,000 signatures necessary to get a recall on the ballot are currently working throughout the state.

Bryan - Keep being naive if it makes you feel better about your hero mayor! You line "A pedophile is one attracted to pre-pubscent children. So to call the Mayor a "pedophile" is ignorant." is ignorant, because the point is it's obvious the pedophile mayor was reaching down as far as he dare go and be able to try to keep it hush hush. Make ten year old boys legal, and watch how many older gay men line up for that! The mayor would be first in line, no question! Don't be stupid, and don't be insulting to the obviuos. Gay men don't like old, they like young, the younger the bettter, and the goal is young boy or at least young boy looking. Want proof? Just look at the majority of the adwork right here on The Advocate! As provacatively young boy teen similar as can be, as young looking as they dare go, without suffering public outcry, ain't it!?!! Trying being honest about your vice for cripes sakes!!

@PJR, A pedophile is one attracted to pre-pubscent children. So to call the Mayor a "pedophile" is ignorant. That doesn't make it okay what he did, but it doesn't make him a pedo. As for your insight that all older gay men want young underage guys, you seem to base this opinion on anecdotal evidence, such as this story, or maybe Mark Foley. That would be like me saying all married "stright" men seek same sex encounters in public restrooms. My evidence....Larry Craig, and a few other notable cases. As for myself, I'm 45 and prefer men around my age. I have no interested in teenagers. I know a lot of people just like me.....so there...jerkface

This is pathetic... The age of consent should be 16 like most civil places in the world.. I know I was seducing older men when I was 15 (and know exactly what I was up too)..

Ben - The emphasis was on the comment "all the time" like older het men pursuing underage teen girls is something that's acceptable in heterosexual society. It's not! And it's sickening to try to justify this gay older man pedophile by saying heterosexuals always do it so what's the big deal?! Also if you took a man the age of the mayor and replace the teen boy with a teen girl it would be rarity that would certianly result in jail time for a long time! This is a problem of older gay men, who seek out either young men or young looking men, and ifyou don't think old gay men prey on young gay or even confused about their sexuality teens or young adults then you are naive! Add in the HUGE difference is it's actually considered acceptable by the gay male community, just keep it on the sly. All you have to do is see how the gay male community has come to this pedophile mayor's defense! Sickening, and wrong!

I really wish there were a term other than pedophile for people (male or female) who pursue teenagers (male or female) in their late teens. I was 19 when I married my then boyfriend after knowing him for a year and a half. We started officially dating mere days after I turned 18. He was fully 13 years older, which was a lifetime of age difference at that point. I look back now and i find that he was creepy and predatory for being interested in somebody so young (we divorced after four years). But I can't rightfully call him a pedophile. I was fully developed and I passed for a good 6 or 7 years older than I really was. I appreciate the need to protect younger people from the predations of older ones... but we are losing something in the translation here by calling people "pedophiles" in situations like these.

They can spin it anyway they want but the man is a pervert and a child molester. I can't see how gays can claim this creep as a role model. If this mayor was straight with a seventeen year old girl, he would be disgraced and removed from office so fast people would not have time to even think. I was watching some show and the people defending him was saying the boy was technically not a child and was talking semantics about his birthdate and when he actually became legal so there was no crime committed. Are you kidding me? Let that be my teenage son and you better believe I would press charges against that bum, that is providing my brothers and uncles did not get a hold of him first and teach him some MANNERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel S - There's a two word answer for an adult "courting" an underage teen with the future intent of a sexual encounter, and that's called "pedophilia stalker"!! Come into reality! This kind of stuff where a much older adult preys on a much younger teen for obvious sexual intent doesn't happen in the heterosexual community, and your claim that "straight people do it all the time" is total bullshit! My guess is you're trying to compare the 18 year old high school senior as adult who's dating a 17 year old junior as underage somehow applies to yet another example of gay men preying on as young as they can get! Just say the truth, and let's just call this vice call gay male like it really is, and that is old hairy gay men love to lurk in the hopes they can to pitch to some underage or at least underage looking, young male catchers, period! This ape just got caught and the gay insiders and power brokers are CYAing big time for him, absolutely necessary to protect themselves!

First, Sam Adams is the mayor of Portland, not the governor of Oregon. Second, while it's regrettable the Atty General chose to focus on the nude pix, if you've been following the story you'll see that Beau Breedlove's comments are inconsistent if not contradictory to themselves over time and that is a bigger issue in terms of credibility. And I agree in the presumption of innocence and that there's a big difference between stupid acts and illegal ones (thank god for that because there'd be a lot of us in jail if we were held to this low standard). All that said, you don't need an illegal act to recall a politician from office, so we'll see what the voters of Portland decide.
