The right-wing Family Research Council is so outraged by the appointment of former Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network president Kevin Jennings to the Department of Education, the group has launched a campaign to get him booted from his post as assistant deputy secretary heading the department's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools..

The Stop Kevin Jennings campaign launched Monday morning with a public relations blitz and a full page ad in the D.C. Examiner newspaper. The ad features a photo of Jennings with several salacious quotes like, "I got stoned more often and went out to the beach at Bellows ... spending hours watching planes take off and land at the airports take off and land at the airport, which is actually quite fascinating when you are drunk and stoned."

The quote came from Jennings' memoir, Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son, which chronicles his coming of age and the origins of GLSEN. A document by from FRC says that Jennings is unfit for the post because of his "unapologetic" use of drugs and alcohol. The organization also claims that Jennings supports protections "for privileged groups (especially homosexuals) rather than safety for all."

I read the poster and I thought it was supporting Jennings. Once I realized that it was part of a smear campaign, I find it laughable that these quotes are the worst thing they can dig up from him. I think he sounds like a rational, realistic person that would be perfect in any school. In response to PJR, I didn't know he was gay when I read the poster.

I'm a mid-50s straight woman. Read on. I have no issue with Jennings unless/until we see problems. Give him a chance. I am Christian, but not a member of an organized religion, and likely never will be. I do, however, respect their rights to their beliefs, as I do my Muslim or atheist or Buddhist friends and neighbors. Those of you saying things about using someones Holy Book as toilet paper are one of the big problems that the LGBT community faces in getting acceptance from others. I hate to see it happen. I would never ask you to deny your beliefs (here, an obvious dislike for the religion), but would encourage you to hold your tongues (or typing fingers) and think before you put things out there that will end up hurting others. Love to you all, Grandma

At first, I was confused. But when I read the poster I found myself thinking "fantastic; I like this guy". This is exactly the progressive nature I'd want in this kind of office. I don't necessarily condone drug use or promiscuous sex, but at the same time, pretending they don't take place in public school (like many public school officials seem to think) is absolutely absurd.

Brad, Yes, having lived most of my life in Texas and Colorado, I do know that New York is not representative of the rest of the country. What I was objecting to is the gross simplification that many people have of understanding the problems gays face by reducing it to one thing, e.g., organized religion or Christianity. Politics is a messy thing, having several variables, culture, history, sociological factors, family dynamics, etc. -- and religion is only one them. I personally think that one of the most important ways that we can influence the granting of full equal rights is simply coming out of the closet, whether it's to our families, friends, co-workers, or even the religious communities that many of us are members of. So let's all keep the "faith" and ACT UP! Bruce

Phillip -- The quotes pasted on the picture above in no way indicate how he plans on administering the office because people's views change. Also, your book reference is pointless: When dealing with culture, there is no such thing as absolute "right" and "wrong", because cultures evolve and change over time. I don't believe in sheltering children from the reality that the world is a pretty crappy place to live at times.

I'm sorry, Bruce, but the statistics speak otherwise. Maybe no one you know supports the people and organizations I mentioned, but New York by no means represents the rest of the country. And my logic skills and poli sci knowledge are perfectly fine, thank you.

I find it curious that there are very negative folks for the gay community who always visit our newsite. Probably to put a 'burr under our saddle' to get a rise out of us. They do us a favor reminding us that the battle continues. Any of us could have said or written taken out of context. What Jennings said in the past doesn't necessarily represent what he means now. Cripes, the right wing likes to back track on their statements. This is a major chess game with moves being made back and forth that either puts us forward and backward. Politics is a dirty. We must keep marching forward and push ahead of these folks who want to live in the past. Even we as individuals from youth to old age make mistakes and learn to become better. So does mankind need to follow this lesson. Our creator just didn't want us to go forward and make more babies, but to go forward and learn, become better and learn how to love each other as he loves us.

The quotes say it all. This is man with an agenda. Keep your agendas away from our children. Tammy Bruce said it best in her book The Death Of Right And Wrong---First the culture, then the children.
