Ian McKellen
decries the Hollywood closet

The U.K. actor says it's still "very, very, very difficult" for American stars to be out.

Accepting a lifetime achievement award at the Berlin Film Festival, out actor Ian McKellen, 66, says that even in the wake of Brokeback Mountain, it's still "very, very, very difficult" for Hollywood stars to be honest about their sexuality. The Independent reports that McKellen noted, "The film industry is very old-fashioned in California. It's very distressing to me that that should be the case." The actor went on to note that after coming out of the closet, he was hired for some of the best roles of his career, including his Oscar-nominated turn in Gods and Monsters and his participation in the Lord of the Rings and X-Men franchises.
