Days after
winning the 2007 Tony award for Best Revival, the producers
of Company have announced that the production,
directed by John Doyle, will close on July 1.
Upon closing
Company will have played 34 previews and 247 regular
performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Opening night
was November 29, 2006.
Doyle's
reproduction of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth 1970
classic continued the tradition of having the actors double
as the musical's orchestra. In spite of critical
acclaim, punctuated by the Tony award, Company
has struggled in the box office throughout its stay on
Broadway. According to Broadway.com, recent shows have
played to under 50% of capacity.
The show follows
five married couples as seen through the eyes of their
mutual friend Bobby, a conflicted bachelor weighing the pros
and cons of marriage. The original production earned
six Tony awards, including Best Musical, in 1970.
