It was a good morning for the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles, which tied the musical Fela! with 11 nods when the Tony nominations were announced Tuesday.
The show was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Robin de Jesus, and Best Lead Actor in a Musical for both Douglas Hodge and Kelsey Grammer.
It joined a number of other gay favorites in receiving multiple nominations. The Elton John/David Furnish–produced Next Fall scored multiple nominations, including one for Best Play. The show’s director, Sheryl Kaller, also scored a nomination.
Broadway veterans Barbara Cook (Sondheim on Sondheim) and Angela Lansbury (A Little Night Music) will face off in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category, while gay performers scoring nominations include Levi Kreis (Million Dollar Quartet) for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and Sean Hayes for Best Actor in a Musical for Promises, Promises.
