10: EVENT: “This Guy's In Love With You,” Dave Koz
Show your support for marriage equality by joining a “love mob” June 5 at the Figueroa Plaza in Ventura, Calif., where out saxophonist Dave Koz will shoot the video for his next single, “This Guy's in Love With You.” “It’s a simple statement of love,” says Koz of the song. “Being bold enough to love whoever you wish, show some vulnerability, and truly celebrate moving beyond our fears.” For more info visit ImperativePictures.com.
9. DVD: Kaboom
“New queer cinema” pioneer Gregg Araki regresses in the best possible way with this trippy sci-fi comedy — winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s first Queer Palm — which is just out on DVD. Cinema Verité’s Thomas Dekker stars as Smith, a horny bisexual college freshman who crushes on his straight surfer roomie (The Amazing Spider-Man’s Chris Zylka) and uncovers an apocalyptic conspiracy with his acerbic lesbian best friend.
8. BOOK: It's Always Darkest Before Dawn, Jeremy Kost
This first monograph from party photographer Jeremy Kost, master of the Polaroid collage, captures New York’s underground club scene with vibrantly skewed portraits of drag queens, go-go boys, trans divas, and hard-partying personalities by cocktail-shaking spontaneity with meticulous composition, accentuating the careful performance aspect of nightlife culture. Curator Eric C. Shiner and club denizen Ladyfag provide keen prefaces.
