9. DVD: The Beat Hotel
Exhausted and outraged following the landmark obscenity trials surrounding his poem Howl, Allen Ginsberg fled to Paris in 1957 with lover Peter Orlovsky and close friend Gregory Corso to take refuge at a cheap hotel in the city's Latin Quarter. Alan Govenar's documentary vividly combines vintage footage, photographs, interviews, and stylized dramatic re-creations to recall a fascinating period in Beat history. Available on DVD Tuesday.
