Hs20140516_10_010. BOOK: Carsick, John Waters
Your mother may have told you never to hitchhike and not to pick up strangers, but America's beloved demented filmmaking uncle John Waters thumbed his way across the country and documented every crazy step of the way. Everything, from stops at creepy McDonald's in the middle of nowhere to getting picked up by people like Connie Francis -- yes, Connie Francis - is told in hilarious, engaging detail. This is John Waters's America, people! Farrar, Straus and Giroux, June 3. - Michelle Garcia

Hs20140516_9_2_09. MUSIC: Xscape, Michael Jackson
This collection of previously unreleased tracks from Michael Jackson's vault showcases the unmistakable sound and talent of the legendary singer. The deluxe version of Xscape features eight songs from Jackson in both their original form and updated versions created by producers Timbaland and L.A. Reid, with additional production flourishes from John McClain, Rodney Jerkins, and StarGate. The album's first single and music video, "Love Never Felt So Good," features Justin Timberlake and is a sweet piece of pop ear candy that reminds us why the King of Pop still reigns supreme. - Jase Peeples

Hs20140516_8_08. THEATER: Pearls Over Shanghai
Opium addicts, singing sailors, prostitutes, and a variety of underworld types abound in this campy comic mock-operetta, set in 1937 Shanghai and first performed by San Francisco's legendary gender-bending Cockettes troupe in the 1970s. S.F. theater company Thrillpeddlers' hit revival was set to close at the end of the month, but it's just been extended through June 28. Thrillpeddlers cofounder Russell Blackwood directs, and original Cockette and composer Scrumbly Koldewyn serves as musical director and accompanist (the book and lyrics are by Link Martin). Two other original Cockettes, "Sweet Pam" Tent and Rumi Missabu, appear in the show. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at the Hypnodrome in San Francisco; tickets and info here.- Trudy Ring

Hs20140516_7_07. DVD: God Loves Uganda
This award-winning documentary chronicles how anti-LGBT hatred was spread by American evangelicals in Uganda, offering a powerful look at the messengers of the antigay dogma that led to Uganda's enactment earlier this year of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, also known as the "Jail the Gays" law. God Loves Uganda is the first feature-length documentary directed and produced by Roger Ross Williams, a 2010 Oscar-winner for Best Documentary Short Subject with Music by Prudence, a portrait of Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Prudence Mabhena and her band. When Williams went to Uganda in 2010 to begin his research, the first person who visited him at his hotel was gay activist David Kato, who would be murdered the next year. Kato said the story Williams had in mind definitely needed to be told. "I needed no further encouragement," Williams says. Bring home this important, shocking, and enlightening film on DVD Tuesday, from First Run Features. -- Sunnivie Brydum and Trudy Ring

In the music video, Act appears both in and out of drag alongside the muscled, tanned stereotypes who frequent the bars on Santa Monica Boulevard. As Act sings, "They may look nice, but do think twice before you take one home." A few surprise guest appearances by fellow Drag Racers makes the video a must-see for the Logo TV show's fans. Hs20140516_2_0_02. TV: Modern Family Season Finale, "The Wedding," Part 2
This Wednesday night on ABC, Modern Family will end its fifth season with the same-sex wedding of the century as Cam and Mitchell finally tie the knot in part 2 of "The Wedding." Though part 1 of the two-part season finale ended in a dramatic cliff-hanger that made it seem as if the gay couple's wedding day was headed for disaster, star Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) took a moment with the The Wall Street Journal shortly after the episode aired to assure fans the couple would definitely be saying "I do" before the season's end. "It's going to happen," Ferguson told the WSJ. "You're going to have to wait another week, but it's going to happen." If you're the type who always cries at weddings, grab some tissues and prepare to watch history unfold Wednesday night. You have been cordially invited. - Jase Peeples
