10. FILM:  Golf Alpha Yankee
Golf Alpha Yankee is one of the first documentaries to shine a spotlight on the perils of being LGBT in Iran. Directed by Rick Flynn, the film focuses primarily on two young men who were arrested and tortured for being gay. Golf Alpha Yankee, which spells “gay” in military call letters, weaves interviews with the men, who are now refugees in Turkey awaiting asylum, with scripted reenactments of the horrors that befell them in the Middle Eastern nation, where those who dare to love someone of the same sex can still face the death penalty. Filmed over the course of two years, the project still needs to raise additional funds through its Kickstarter campaign, which ends this weekend. 9. ART: “Marsden Hartley: The German Paintings, 1913-1915”
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosts the first U.S. exhibition focused on gay American artist Hartley’s time in Berlin, when he was inspired by the city’s vibrant gay community and fell in love with a German military officer, Carl von Freyburg, who was killed early in World War I. Some of Hartley’s images memorialize his lost love, while other works are more abstract. The show opened early this month and continues through November 30; there are docent-led tours Friday and Sunday afternoons. LACMA is also offering two related exhibitions: “Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky,” through September 14, and “Haunted Screens: German Cinema in the 1920s,” opening September 21. 8. MUSIC: “Break Free, ”Ariana Grande Featuring Zedd
Ariana Grande’s music video for her track “Break Free” is a sexy, geektastic delight that blends sci-fi and anime visuals from across space and time. Nods to the Jane Fonda classic Barbarella, Gravity, Star Trek, and Star Wars can all be found here as well as an LOL-inducing Mazinger Z–inspired moment where Grande shoots missiles from her breasts. Also, keep an eye out for the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it alien same-sex smooch at the 3:25 mark. — Jase Peeples
