A Worldwide Day of Protest Against Discrimination

Activists around the world marked the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia today. The annual event, begun in 2004, reminds the world that more than 80 countries still criminalize same-sex relationships, and more subtle discrimination against LGBT people continues to exist even in progressive nations.

Serbian activists in central Belgrade mark the International Day Against Homophobia with rainbow colors. Two thirds of Europe's LGBT people are still afraid to be public about their identity, and a quarter have been victims of physical or verbal attacks, according to a European Union report released Friday.
