Ian Harvie, the world’s first FTM transgender comedian, has long been a favorite among other LGBT performers, like Margaret Cho (who once described herself as his number 1 fan). Now his celebrity friends are coming out to help him create Super Hero: Ian Harvie’s Standup Comedy Special.
“I will be the first trans guy with his own standup comedy special on television,” Harvie says of the show, which is filming January 7 at Portland Stage Company in Portland, Maine. “You bet your sweet ass I will!”
But Harvie needs to finish raising several thousand dollars for the production costs, so he’s turned to Kickstarter. And his friend, the famous queer comic Margaret Cho? She’s offered a private Skype or Facetime Mini Concert with her and Harvie for anyone who donates at a certain level. Other prizes include mix tapes, awkwardly long hugs, seminude photos, and the rather attractive Harvie acting as your handyman for a day — and the usual associate producer credits.
Cho will also make a special appearance at the January 7 filming, which is being directed by Liam K. Sullivan, the queer performer who has written, directed, and starred in dozens of sketch and musical comedy videos, garnering him a People’s Choice Award for his YouTube efforts. You might remember Sullivan's character Kelly and her “Shoes” videos, which were a smash a few years ago. Sullivan's videos collectively have had over 100 million views.
Harvie has been the host of the long-running Ian Harvie Show, a queer comedy and talk show filmed live at Largo in Los Angeles. He’s gone toe-to-toe with numerous LGBT celebs on the show including Jorja Fox, Jane Lynch, Alan Cumming, and, of course, Cho (who even asked Harvie to perform with on her Beautiful tour).
Harvie’s distinctive deadpan humor and amusing LGBT anecdotes about everything from gender codes to coming out and boys’ bathroom etiquette have been wowing his radio show and stage audiences for years, especially in Los Angeles. Now fans will get to see what he’ll do on TV. That is, of course, if he raises enough money by December 15.
